One thing that makes mesothelioma such a serious condition is that it is usually not found until the late stages of the cancer, causing the survival rate to be low. This is because the symptoms don't usually arise until the late stages.
By this time the patient most likely doesn't have much longer to live. Studies show most patients who are diagnosed with mesothelioma have a year or less left to live. Along with diagnosis being difficult and delayed, mesothelioma is also fairly uncommon and we are still learning more about the disease.
However, some studies show that one out of every ten mesothelioma patients will live up to three years after diagnosis and one out of every twenty people will live five years after diagnosis.
Studies are performed daily and new clinical trials are helping to increase the survival rate of those with mesothelioma. Survival rates vary depending on where the study is performed, and who is performing the study. In general, studies are very close in comparison.
Survival rates are based on several different factors. Some of these factors are, the size of the tumor, the stage the patient is in, whether the tumor can be completely removed with surgery, the quantity of fluid in the chest and abdomen and how long it took to diagnose the cancer.
Some other interesting facts about mesothelioma survival rates are that the average age of the patients who are diagnosed with mesothelioma are sixty one years of age and eighty one percent were male.
As said before, many studies are performed daily to find new ways to prolong the survival rate of those who have mesothelioma. Many studies have already proven to do just that. Lots of studies show that chemotherapy greatly increases the survival rate of those with mesothelioma. So, although this is a newer and less common cancer we are learning more about it daily.
With our learning we'll eventually come up with more options of treatment and this will lead to an all together higher survival rate.

Mesothelioma Treatment Research

Obviously Mesothelioma treatment research is important for the person who has the cancer, the family of the person who has the cancer, and for physicians and researchers who are trying to find a cure.
For the patient it is very important to research the disease for many reasons. One reason is that it helps you to understand the disease. While researching you can find others who have the disease and what treatments have worked the best for them.
Thanks to chemical and laboratory researchers there are lots of new treatments available. Researching can also help you to understand things that could have caused the cancer. Taking the time to research and find out as much as you can about the disease can give you a piece of mind about what you or your loved one may be going through.
On the other side the work done by chemical and laboratory researchers is of most importance. Researchers are busy daily trying to find a way to treat, and hopefully in the future, cure mesothelioma. While they research, they find new and better ways to treat the disease.
Researchers realize that each person is different and they are trying to find a way to help everyone with mesothelioma and other forms of cancer. It is because of these devoted people that we have the treatments we use today. Researchers test there theories by doing clinical trials, and consistently trying to learn more about the biology of mesothelioma.
Each person is different and therefore requires a different form of treatment. Some go with the more conventional treatment plan while others may try clinical trials. Finding out the best treatment is important, and researching is a big aid in the fight.
There are many different ways to treat and even put cancer into remission. Many treatments that researchers have constructed are proven to be very effective, but so far there is no guarantee that a treatment will work for every patient. But, there is hope, because there are many companies, agencies, and professionals that are helping in the fight to end Mesothelioma cancer.

British Workers Ignorant to the Dangers of Asbestos

A British Lung Foundation survey has revealed that most tradespeople are unaware of the health risks posed by asbestos. Out of 400 people in this survey relating to asbestos, it was found that 75% had not received any form of asbestos awareness training. The survey showed that asbestos related diseases are currently the main cause of work related ill health. The survey on the mineral fiber estimated that approximately 3000 people die each year due to exposure to the mineral dust.
This fiber was commonly used in the construction of many buildings due to its insulation and fire retardant properties. It was used in some building materials until 1999; however most was phased out in the early 1980s. Tradespeople now have the highest risk of developing asbestos related lung cancers, mesothelioma and asbestosis as they regularly disturb and come into contact with materials that may contain asbestos fibres. Building owners should always consider having a survey carried out on their premise. An asbestos survey can help evaluate the presence and extent of any suspect asbestos containing materials in any building and assess their condition.
The British Lung Foundation survey relating to the fiber concentrated on builders, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, joiners and gas fitters. The survey found one in 10 had felt under pressure to continue working even if they had not seen a survey for the building and suspected that the dangerous fiber was present. In addition, nearly a third of those in the survey mistakenly believed that they did not need to see any types of asbestos survey because it had already been removed from all British buildings.
The majority of tradesmen - 81% in the British Lung Foundation's asbestos survey - said they never, rarely or only sometimes asked if the site they were working on had been checked for the fiber via an official asbestos survey, before they started a job - even though it is a legal requirement for them to see a survey which informs them of the presence of the dangerous mineral fiber.
Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006, it is a legal requirement that all those that may disturb the fabric of any building must have Asbestos Awareness Training. This form of awareness training for asbestos helps tradespeople increase their general awareness of the fiber within their working environment. It has been estimated that as many as 20 tradespeople die every week as a result of exposure to this fiber in their workplace. In fact exposure to asbestos has been deemed as one of Britain's biggest workplace killers.
So why isn't awareness training a number one priority for all tradespeople because with better training they would reduce their risks of asbestos related lung disease and mesothelioma. However if the British tradespeople continue their ignorance to the dangers of asbestos and don't put their own health first then campaigns, like those run by the British Lung Foundation, to eliminate asbestos related cancers such as mesothelioma and make them a disease of the past, are a lost cause.
So lets all strive to make our British tradespeople more aware of the dangers of asbestos by making sure asbestos awareness training is a core skill they all own and all tradespeople are presented with an official survey before they start a job on a particular site.

Asbestos Laws and Occupations at Risk

Although state and federal governments have established statutes to regulate the use of asbestos, many occupational and household cases of asbestos exposure continue to cause dangerous asbestos-related diseases, such as mesothelioma or asbestosis. The asbestos laws work to protect those who have been exposed to the dangerous substance and wish to seek compensation for their suffering. Diagnosis of these diseases does not end favorably in most cases and many victims are only given a year to live after the initial diagnosis. Asbestos was an acceptable and commonly used substance in the 1940s, 50s, 60s and even 70s, however, scientists and doctors have come to understand that the material is deadly to those who were exposed to it for long periods of time.
Asbestos at Work
In the workplace, asbestos laws state that the acceptable level of asbestos is 0.1 fibers per cubic centimeter in a 30-minute time period. The laws also require employers to test for asbestos exposure levels, as well as provide employees with protective clothing and equipment, hygienic work areas, and adequate training on how to work with materials that contain asbestos.
Exposure to dangerous asbestos fibers has caused the development of cancer in a variety of different occupations over the years. The fibers, once inhaled or ingested, begin to scar the tissue inside of the body. Cancer caused by asbestos exposure often does not show any symptoms for several decades, slowly developing and spreading over time. Certain occupations are at a higher risk level than others, depending on the amount and time that the person is exposed to the asbestos fibers without any kind of protective mask.
While some occupations are more obviously at risk, such as construction workers who come in direct contact with insulation filled with asbestos, some workers may have no idea that they are being exposed to such a dangerous substance. Mechanics, for example, may be unaware of the danger of brake pads, which often contain asbestos. Plumbers may also be unknowingly at risk of developing cancer due to the asbestos found in pipes and other materials associated with their job.
Occupations at risk of asbestos exposure include, but are not limited to Engineers, Oil Refinery Workers, Painters, Railroad Workers, Plumbers, Mechanics, Welders, Teachers, Construction Workers, Sailors, Blacksmiths, Hairdressers, and Insulators.
A Mesothelioma Lawyer Can Help
If you have been exposed to asbestos due to occupational conditions or the use of household products containing the substance, contact an attorney immediately to discuss your legal options. You may be eligible to seek damages for past and future medical bills, lost income, loss of potential earnings, pain and suffering, and more. If your employer has not followed the state and federal regulations passed to protect workers from asbestos exposure, it is your legal right to organize a lawsuit against your negligent employer.

Asbestos Mesothelioma Treatment - How Treatment is Conducted For Asbestos Mesothelioma Cancer

There are different types of treatment for mesothelioma, which is caused by asbestos exposure. The different therapies include: conventional therapies, experimental, and holistic therapies.
The first thing to do when diagnosed with mesothelioma is to find the physician that is best for you. You will need help in researching and deciding which treatment is best for you and a physician will know the answers you are seeking.
Not only should the physician know about the disease but they should also be able to guide you and help you to decide the best treatment option. It can also be helpful to look at informational and educational resources to help you better understand the condition.
It is important at this point to figure out what stage of the disease you are in. The process of finding this out is called "staging". A physician can base a decision as to the best treatment option on the stage and general health the patient is in. "Staging" can tell the physician if the cancer has spread, and if it has, to where in the body it has spread.
Chemotherapy is among one of the most widely used treatments of mesothelioma. Chemotherapy consists of using very strong medications to kill the cancer. The downfall is that chemotherapy can also harm healthy cells in the body. For example, you will notice that most patients undergoing chemotherapy lose their hair. Chemotherapy usually affects the healthy cells that grow quickly, hair being one of these cells. Another common side effect is nausea. Chemotherapy can be administered at a doctor's office or hospital depending on the facility.
Radiation is another widely used and conventional type of treatment for mesothelioma caused by asbestos. In many cases, radiation is used with chemotherapy. Radiation is used to attack cancerous tissue and keep it from spreading. It can be administered as a pill or injection and depending on the type of radiation it can be implanted into the body as a seed, capsule, or wire.
These are forms of internal radiation. There are also types of external radiation which are provided by a machine that has a source of a radioactive substance that can be accelerated in the body from the outside. Radiation like chemotherapy also has side effects such as exhaustion and nausea. Radiation is usually an outpatient procedure.
Surgery is another conventional form of therapy for mesothelioma. Surgery can be preformed to remove sources of cancer. Surgery is usually accompanied by chemotherapy and radiation. Chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery are just the conventional methods of treatment and there are certainly many more options to choose from when considering therapy for mesothelioma caused by asbestos.

Pleural Mesothelioma - Facts, Diagnosis and Causes of Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural Mesothelioma is one of the three different types of mesothelioma cancer. The other two types are pericardial and peritoneal. Out of the three types, pleural is the most common to be diagnosed, at seventy-five percent of all Mesothelioma diagnosis.
Pleural mesothelioma affects the lining of the lungs, which is called the pleura. When cancer is in the pleura it is referred to as pleural mesothelioma, along with the lungs, there is a thin membrane which is called the mesothelium, thus, the name of the cancer. The mesothelium's function is to provide fluid for the lungs so that they can contract and expand. The mesothelium is vital in order to breath.
Pleural mesothelioma develops when a person is constantly exposed to asbestos. A lot of patients who have pleural mesothelioma were exposed to the asbestos while at work.
When asbestos fibers are inhaled on a continuous basis they become embedded in the pleura. When they embed themselves in the pleura it settles and causes inflammation. With the inflammation comes the danger of cancerous tumors. It can take years before the cancer surfaces.
Symptoms for mesothelioma do not usually occur until the late stages. Some of the symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and chest pain, fluid around the lungs, and difficulty speaking or hoarseness.
These symptoms can be, and often are, confused with other common illness, which makes pleural mesothelioma extremely hard to diagnose correctly. In most cases the first symptom of pleural mesothelioma is chest pain. The chest pain is caused by growing tumors in the pleural space. The tumors also cause the pleural space to fill with fluid.
There is no cure for pleural mesothelioma but there are many treatment options and researchers are working on more treatment options daily.

Mesothelioma Effects on the Body Cavity

The mesothelium is a membrane that covers the abdominal cavity, the chest cavity, and the heart. It is made up of cells that also cover just about all of the human internal organs.
It also produces fluids that are vital for the organs to function properly. For example, the mesothelium provides the lungs the fluid they need to properly expand for breathing. Along with providing the fluid for the lungs to expand and contract, the mesothelium also will provide the fluid for the intestines to move freely for proper digestion and the heart will move freely to contract.
The mesothelium that covers the lungs is called the pleura, the mesothelium around the heart is called the pericardium, and the mesothelium that covers the abdomen is the peritoneum. Each of these vital organs must have the vital fluids that are provided by it to function.
Mesothelioma is cancer of the mesothelium. The mesothelium is made up of two layers and this cancer starts in the middle of these two layers. When mesothelioma is diagnosed it greatly affects the proper functions of the mesothelium. The body cavities will slowly stop functioning. When mesothelioma occurs the cells of the mesothelium start dividing.
When the cells start dividing, they divide uncontrollably and abnormally. This cell division can damage other organs that are near by. And without treatment it can spread fast and go to the main organs in your body.
Symptoms occur when tumors start to get larger and fluid starts to fill up the mesothelium walls. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer that greatly endangers the human body cavity. Mesothelioma is a fairly new discovery and research is being done daily to get more treatment options for this cancer. It is hard to diagnose this vicious cancer because it is so uncommon and many of the symptoms can be read as the same as many other illnesses.

New Treatments For Mesothelioma Cancer

More new treatments for mesothelioma are being tested and tried daily. Scientists also try the conventional methods of treatment like radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery in combination to try to come up with the fastest and most accurate treatment for mesothelioma. Below are a few of the new treatments that are being tried at this point.
Immunotherapy is one new treatment being tested at this time. Immunotherapy uses the patients own immune system to fight the mesothelioma. Immunotherapy consists of using substances found in the immune system to counteract the growth of the tumor.
Some substances that have been used in laboratory studies are interferon and interleukin-2. These substances have been found effective in laboratory studies but in those with malignant mesothelioma and there clinical trials the immunotherapy has not been effective.
Another new mesothelioma treatment is called heat therapy. Heat therapy works in the way that it heats the chemotherapy agents before they are injected. When these chemicals are heated before injection it seems to kill more of the tumor cells. This new mesothelioma treatment is also known as chemo hyperthermia and has shown good results in those with malignant mesothelioma.
Gene therapy is a new mesothelioma treatment that some believe to be a big key in future studies of mesothelioma. Gene therapy involves manipulating the genes involved in the tumor into a virus, such as the common cold, and then using antiviral drugs or your own immune system to destroy the cells.
Studies are still being conducted on this therapy. So far, this treatment has been effective for early stages of malignant mesothelioma and other types of tumors.
Another type of new mesothelioma treatment being tested in various studies is called Photodynamic Therapy. Photodynamic Therapy consists of injecting light sensitive molecules in the pleural space before surgery. When the surgery is done light is put directly on the molecules, thus killing the tumor cells. This study has not shown improved survival but studies are still being done to try this treatment.
Other new studies are done daily and many patients try clinical trials. Clinical trials are research studies that are done to collect information for new drugs or devices. Clinical trials can be the best treatment in some instances. Clinical trials are different tests done by physicians who have advanced knowledge. A Clinical trial could very easily prove to be the cure to mesothelioma in the future.

Mesothelioma Treatment Using Brachytherapy

Brachytherapy is a form of radiotherapy and is an advanced form of treatment for mesothelioma. It has been used for over a century for the treatment of mesothelioma.
Radiotherapy is used to treat mesothelioma by ionizing radiation, thus killing cancer cells. Radiotherapy can be performed internally or externally. When radiotherapy is performed externally the radiation is put into the body from an object outside the body, which is usually called a linear accelerator.
When radiotherapy is performed internally radiation is put inside the body. Internal radiotherapy can also be called brachytherapy. "Brachy" comes from the Greek word for "short range." The radiation is put into the body at short range, thus, brachytherapy. Some other names for internal radiotherapy are sealed source radiotherapy, seed implantation radiotherapy or endocurietherapy.
The radiation is placed either inside the cancer source or very close to it. The radiation that is placed inside emits radiation killing the cancerous cells but can only kill up to a one inch diameter, so the radiation must be placed close to the cancerous site.
There are two different types of brachytherapy:
- temporary brachytherapy- permanent brachytherapy
Temporary brachytherapy consists of placing the radioactive seeds (radiation) inside the body and then taking them out after a certain amount of time.
Permanent brachytherapy consists of placing the radioactive seeds inside the body and leaving them. The radioactive seeds actually stop emitting radiation after a certain amount of time but lay in the body causing no problems.
There are actually teams of people who administer the brachytherapy. Among this team are a radiation oncologist, a radiation physicist, a radiation therapist, and the person who manually does the procedure.
The radiation oncologist decides the area to be treated and the overall treatment plan, the radiation physicist decides the best equipment to be used to infuse the radiation, the dosimetrist decides the dosage to be given and helps in distributing the dose and the radiation therapist operates the equipment that administers the radiation.
Brachytherapy is considered to be a safer method of treatment for mesothelioma than other treatments for the cancer, but there are side effects of this procedure. Right after the procedure there is soreness at the site of the radiation there may also be swelling in the same area. Short-term side effects are soreness and bleeding at the site but generally only last a few days.

Some of the Risk Factors Associated With Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a kind of cancer the affects the mesothelium which is a protective cover for many internal organs including the intestines, heart, lungs and others. The disease is associated with asbestos and majority of all cases have come into contact with the substance either through contact or inhaling it. When a factory worker handles asbestos, he risks exposing it to his family and therefore it becomes a very serious issue when so many people have to suffer. This is one of the cancer that affects the lungs and is not associated with smoking. Generally, the disease is quite rare and in the United States, only 2,000 cases are diagnosed annually and the disease is more common in men than in women. It has been found that you can be exposed to asbestos and 30 or 50 years later, will be when you start experiencing the symptoms of the disease.
Therefore, the major risk factor to getting mesothelioma is working near asbestos. If you have no idea what asbestos is, then you need to know that it is a name given to a group of minerals and they occur naturally. Their strong fibers can be woven because they are very flexible. They are used in industries to produce various products like roof shingles, brake linings, cement, flooring products, textiles and insulation. Many workers in this industry can inhale the fibers and some may be trapped in their cloths. When the disease had not been discovered, many people used to suffer and they all seemed to work in the asbestos mining industry. When the cause was established, safety measures were put in place and workers in the U.S wear personal protective equipment and are only exposed to acceptable amounts of asbestos.
Workers also take other safety measures like showering and changing cloths before they leave their work areas. This enables them to reduce the risk of exposing the asbestos to their families. The symptoms of mesothelioma vary from the specific organs they affect and in the chest, you will experience shortness of breathe and intense pain. In the abdomen, you will have bowel obstruction, blood clotting, anemia, lack of appetite and weight loss. There will be a host of other symptoms like swelling of the face and trouble while swallowing. You are advised not to hesitate but, to see a specialist who will make recommendations for treatment if you are suffering from a form of mesothelioma.
Once you visit the doctor, he will do a test for mesothelioma and it is one of the most difficult tests to do. Very many diseases have similar symptoms and this is the reason why it is so hard to diagnose. Your history will provide the major clue as to whether, you have had asbestos exposure. A series of x rays will be performed as well as a host of other examinations. A biopsy will determine whether the cells are noncancerous in your body and if they are cancerous, you will be advised on the way forward. There are many treatment options available and you can recover completely from this disease. The options are surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and others which have not been approved.

How to Get the Guidance of Good Mesothelioma Attorneys

When you are a mesothelioma patient, you may have the law to give you the justice that you deserve. If your condition was caused by neglect, then you might have a case against your employer or the person responsible. To make it through the process, you need the guidance of a good lawyer and mesothelioma attorneys are so many. Their number has been perpetuated by the lucrative cases which fetch so much money that see them get 40% of the total reward. All winnings can be over a million dollars and this is why you need to choose mesothelioma attorneys who are thinking about more than money. There are several tips that will be helpful and it is upon you to read and understand. Then, take the necessary caution, and you will have what you need.
Firstly, you need to know what your rights are and if you have been affected by asbestos, you have the right to a compensation. The major reason for this is because the companies which use asbestos to manufacture products have the knowledge that the substance is harmful and the fact that they kept this information to themselves, gives them a case to answer. Most companies kept this information to maintain their profits and to avoid legal tussles with the workers. Mesothelioma attorneys should therefore have a deeper knowledge and understanding of all that pertains to mesothelioma cases. You should therefore go the extra mile to find out how many cases they have managed to take to trial and how many they have worn. They should back this with evidence so that you avoid lip service. This will go a long way in helping your case stand a better chance of winning.
The other thing you need to know while finding the right mesothelioma attorneys, is whether they intend to refer your case to another law firm or they intend to handle it themselves. You need to deal directly with the mesothelioma attorneys who must not act as middlemen. Other middlemen are not attorneys themselves and you need to be especially careful to find one who will be best for you. You need to consider your location. You do not have to go around the country to find mesothelioma attorneys because the distance might not work for your good. A thorough search through the internet will reveal that in your locality, you have several suitable lawyers.
Trials are very hard to conduct and preparing for them will require several expenses. You therefore need to consider how you will settle all the payments including the attorney's fee. Most situations work on contingency basis where the attorney fees are settled when the case is concluded and won. If the case is not a victory, then the lawyer loses too. The other vital thing you should know about your attorney is whether they are capable of communicating well. They need to give you a summary of what they plan to do to make sure they win the case. Some lawyers are not convincing at all and, it is upon you to judge who is more likely to deliver the facts of the case the best way you see fit.

How to Choose a Good Mesothelioma Lawyer

A good mesothelioma lawyer should have all the good qualities which include competence and knowledge. They should be able to give you a history of the disease as well as the strides that have been made in new cases that pertain to mesothelioma. Firstly, mesothelioma is a form of cancer that affects the protective lining of the abdomen, lungs and heart and it is caused by a natural occurring mineral called asbestos. Asbestos has been called the miracle mineral because it is one of the few substances resistant to fire. Therefore asbestos is a carcinogen or a substance that can cause cancer. The disease can manifest itself 30 to 50 years after exposure. If you are a patient of mesothelioma, you can file a case against the company you were working for. This is usually because the company needs to warn its workers of possible danger and failure to do this usually costs them when they are sued.
A good mesothelioma lawyer should have experience and should have won several cases. This is a case that will change your whole life, you therefore need to invest as much time as you can to make sure you have a good conclusion to the case. They should portray interest and dedication to the case and be ready to give it their best. Giving you brief history of what to expect goes a long way and, you will be more informed on the case from the beginning thanks to mesothelioma lawyer. Some middlemen have managed to disguise themselves as lawyers while all they want is a share of your reward when you win the case.
Therefore, knowing the qualifications of a lawyer can only help you determine whether they are suitable for your case. On the internet, there are so many options of mesothelioma lawyers and many are seeking just to benefit. Your main concern is that you win the case in the most professional manner possible. There are people who engage in a debate of judging the opportunistic 'professionals' and this may not be helpful in any case. One of the best thing that can shed so much light to your case is the experiences of other patients and their attorneys. Make it a priority to have this information so that you can avoid many pitfalls that they may have gotten into.
Choosing a good mesothelioma layer will take searching and dedication to seek the best. Find a layer from your locality to make the whole process convenient. Some lawyers on the internet advertise themselves purporting to be at a location they are not in. Make sure you see the lawyers office when you communicate with them. Know every aspect of the law beforehand in regard to mesothelioma. This will help save so much time and your lawyer can move forward and plan for the case. Finally, know how exactly you are going to settle the lawyers fee. Go for a contingency plan and this is where you pay them with you winnings in court. This is definitely convenient and many law firms have engaged in this and the major reason is to attract as many clients as possible. If you win the case, the lawyer gets a substantial amount of money.

A Look at Some Treatment Options For Mesothelioma Cancer

Mesothelioma cancer is malignant mesothelioma and this means that cells found in the lining of various organs like heart, lungs and abdomen, grow abnormally retaining fluid. This disease has been around for a long time and it was first discovered in 1887 and then ignored. It was until 1970s that companies and governments started to recognize that it is a serious disease. This is mainly because it is caused by a mineral that can manufacture up to 3,000 products. The mineral occurs naturally on the earth and it is usually mined and is commonly called asbestos. This is a unique substance for apart from causing a deadly disease, it defies fire and cannot be burnt. Mesothelioma cancer affects the lining referred to as the mesothelium and exposure to asbestos could have happened during childhood. It takes over 30 years for the symptoms to start showing.
The disease has not been very common although the number of new cases has increased by a little percentage. Men will suffer from the disease more often than women and people of all ages can be affected. The people who are at a higher risk of getting the disease work closely with asbestos and they include shipyard workers, asbestos mine workers and so many other workers. They can expose their families with their cloths. Safety measures have now be put in place to protect industry workers and protective cloths and equipment have been introduced. Workers can also take a shower and change cloths before they leave their work premises. Symptoms of mesothelioma cancer differ with the particular organ the disease affects. Some of the most common symptoms include the following.
You will experience swelling of various organs, pain, weight loss, bowel obstruction, blood clotting, anemia and so many other symptoms. When you suspect you have the illness, do not conclude that it is mesothelioma cancer you have to go through a series of tests first before you conclude whether your illness is malignant or cancerous. You will have x rays performed and even a biopsy and when the doctor finds conclusive evidence of the disease, this is not the end. The symptoms of mesothelioma cancer are so similar to other diseases and it is therefore very difficult to diagnose the disease. You have very many treatment options and they can manage your condition depending on how bad it is. If the doctor recommends a certain treatment, like surgery, you can consult and make sure that it is the best decision for you available. Radiation and chemotherapy options are also available.
There are other treatment options that have not been concluded and you will find so many resources on this topic. Getting the right knowledge is vital to help you know what to expect if you are affected by the problem. You will be in a position to help others when the opportunity arises. Patients can sue for compensation if they feel that they need justice to be done. Good mesothelioma lawyers are available and it is upon you to find a lawyer who can represent you to win the case.

How to Identify a Good Mesothelioma Attorney

When you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma and you have previously been exposed to asbestos, you are eligible to file a lawsuit claim that will seek compensation. If you have no idea what mesothelioma is, then you will be sad to hear that it is a deadly disease which is caused by a natural mineral used in industries called asbestos. It affects the protective covering of the heart, lungs and abdomen. Manufacturing companies that deal with the substance are in the cement industry, shipyards and so many others. Mesothelioma attorneys come in handy when you need to be represented and represented well. There are several things that you need to consider when looking for a good mesothelioma attorney and they include the following.
They should be legal and registered by the government with a valid license to practice. They should also come with a wealth of experience. You need to put your case in the hands of an attorney who has dealt with other cases and won. Some evidence to back it up will be necessary because some lawyers survive on exaggeration and falsehood. The internet is full of mesothelioma attorneys advertising themselves to potential clients. They certainly benefit from the afflictions of patients and to them it is business as usual. You need to know that you stand a chance in winning the case. A mesothelioma attorney will be paid when the case is over and the common pay is 40% of the compensation. You therefore need to agree with your lawyer on the terms and mode of payment before you start the case.
There are lawyers who advertise themselves all over the country and they wish to get clients from all over. This may prove expensive and hectic for you and when you are finding a good mesothelioma attorney, they need to be from near or within your state. The case will be easier when planning for meetings and court appearances. You should therefore undertake a search to find out more of their background and come up with information that will help determine their competence.
A good mesothelioma attorney should be positive and should not impose things on you. They need to offer advise and you must have the freedom to refuse it or take it. This is because they might also be wrong and for the purpose of keeping a balance of opinions, you must decide on certain things pertaining to the case. When you are satisfied with your layer, you can then concentrate on the case. It may take a very long time including years to be concluded and you must be prepared to fight through to the end. There is no doubt that after you have won the case, you will look back and appreciate taking the time to find a good lawyer.

Why Mesothelioma Lawyers Should Be Credible and Trustworthy

Mesothelioma lawyers are everywhere and they produce some of the most entertaining and creative advertisements to market themselves. You can therefore be easily fooled by taking their word for it. You need to take time and choose a lawyer who will work for you in a dedicated way so that you may secure the win. Firstly, mesothelioma is a kind of cancer that is caused by a certain carcinogen called asbestos. It causes the lining of the heart, lungs and abdomen to be disabled by the production of abnormal or cancerous cells. People who work in the industry of mining asbestos are usually at a risk as well as those who work in other industries that use this substance to produce products. It can produce over 3,000 products and it is therefore very useful but, deadly.
Companies which have full knowledge that the substance is harmful and go ahead not to warn workers, usually pay millions of dollars to settle the claims from patients or plaintiffs. Mesothelioma lawyers facilitate this process and this is the reason why you need a good layer. You may be faced with a lot when you receive the diagnosis and some of the issues are financial. The fact that you need treatment and at the same time you need a lawyer, will definitely be a source of stress for you. Depending on the laws of your state, you need to know that the more time you take, the more you might miss out on a chance to sue. Let mesothelioma lawyers explain this to you.
The mesothelioma lawyers should be credible and trustworthy. They should be qualified with enough proof of previous successes. This will help your case so much. The lawyers must be willing to guide you carefully through the process to show you what is expected and the chances you have of winning. It is therefore necessary to have a lawyer who will not be from another state or who lives too far away from your location. You must never assume on the terms of payment. Many cases, in fact in majority of cases there is a contingency agreement and the mesothelioma lawyers will only be paid once the process is completed. This is a very convenient way for the clients and they are able to go through the process with minimal expenses.
Do a thorough research on cases that have been passed before and see what exactly you need to prepare yourself for. If possible, talk to people who have won the lawsuits and their experiences will be invaluable to your case. With the proper guidance from your lawyer, you will be able to go through the process with ease. Some cases take months and others years and you need to engage in patience. If everything goes as planned, you will win the lawsuit and receive a compensation. Your lawyer will have to be paid on the agreed terms and you will be satisfied you got your justice. Nothing can really compensate for a deadly disease but, you will be able to pay for your treatment and recover well.

This is How Deadly Malignant Mesothelioma Is

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare cancer that has been found to be caused by asbestos. The disease affects the mesothelium walls and cause the cells to be cancerous. Around 2,000 cases are diagnosed every year in the United States. This disease can have a person stay over 30 years without it developing and showing symptoms. It is deadly just like any other form of cancer and it can be treated when it has not yet spread to all the major organs. Malignant mesothelioma is usually a heartbreaking diagnosis but, you need to know that you can file a legal claim against the company in which you think you got the asbestos exposure from. The disease manifests with various symptoms depending on the area affected. The abdomen mesothelioma is called peritoneal mesothelioma and it can be malignant.
You will experience discomfort with bowel blockage, pain, bloating, swelling and you can feel a mass in your abdomen, loss of appetite, swelling of other organs around the stomach and others. If your lungs and breathing system is affected, you will experience chest pains, shortness of breathe, coughing and weight loss. The symptoms can be different depending on the bodies of individuals. Immediately you notice such symptoms do not stay in your home and say that you have mesothelioma. You can only say it conclusively if the proper tests are done to determine the presence of the disease. The doctor will perform several tests and they include chest x rays, biopsy and others. If found that you have malignant mesothelioma, you do not have to panic because you can be cured.
However, the disease must be contained before spreading to other areas and sometimes when the condition is too bad, nothing can be done. This however does not mean that recovery is impossible, you have to maintain a positive attitude. For a cure, you have the option of surgery. It can totally heal your disease and it is sometimes accompanied by radiation and chemotherapy. Chemotherapy involves the use of drugs to kill cancer cells while radiation is the use of rays to also suppress the disease. You need to take time and look at the facts as offered to you by the doctor and make decisions that will facilitate your cure. If you find that your condition is not malignant then it is benign an this means that you do not have cancerous cells.
People who suffer from malignant mesothelioma are usually advised to participate in clinical trials of new drugs. They can provide a window to relief and healing. There are also many support groups they can find and form to share their experiences. Many people suffer alone and this is not necessary because being around people with the same experiences will enable you to open up and as a result, you will reduce the stress in your body improving your immunity and this will contribute to your getting better. Remember that you have the option to fight for your rights and a good mesothelioma lawyer will guide you through the process until you get victory and compensation.

These Are Some of the Symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma

Pleural mesothelioma is a disease that affects the lining of the lungs and these linings are called lung pleura. This disease has been mistaken for lung cancer but, the two have no association because this disease affects the serous membrane. The serous membrane is found on several organs near the chest and abdomen and the most common place the disease affects is the lungs. In most cases, the disease is malignant and this means that it is a form of cancer. Like many other mesothelioma cases, it is caused by the exposure to asbestos. The most common way you can get the pleural mesothelioma is through inhalation. You can take in the asbestos fibers with the air and the body is not able to expel them out of your system and therefore, over a long period of time even up to 30 years, they cause the lining cells to change their form because of scarring and the disease forms.
The major symptom of pleural mesothelioma is heavy breathing because of the fluid which has built up and accumulated putting pressure on the lungs. Other symptoms that will contribute to the build up of the fluid are coughing persistently. You will sometimes cough blood, swallowing will become a major task for you, you will experience shortness of breath even when at a resting position, fatigue, weight loss, pain in the chest area and lumps which will be under the skin in your chest. When you start to see some of this symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical help because you might have a fair chance of recovery. Delaying usually worsens any case. If you suspect to have been exposed to asbestos, it will also be helpful to get checked out for the evidence of the disease and you stand a better chance of getting rid of possibilities of future development.
It is very difficult to test for pleural mesothelioma because the symptoms are so similar to other disease like pneumonia and influenza. The latency period or the time that it takes to develop is usually very long and the disease may have occurred without any symptoms. Apart from observing the symptoms, some tests will have to be undertaken to know exactly where the disease is and whether it has spread. The tests will also seek to find out what type of cancer it is. The test will include x rays, biopsies and others. There are several treatment options for pleural mesothelioma and other treatments have not yet been approved. The known treatments which can provide a cure are surgery. The tumor is surgically removed and other treatments are administered to prevent a re-occurrence.
Chemotherapy is a term that refers to the drugs used to treat cancer. These drugs are designed to target and kill the cells that are dividing but, it is not specific on the cancer cells so, healthy and good cells are also destroyed and this is the reason patients loose hair and become weak. The hair cells and immunity cells are being destroyed along with the cancerous cells. Therefore the side effects for this treatment are hair loss, nausea and lack of appetite. You will also be prone to infections because of a low immunity.

FAQ's About Mesothelioma and Answers From a Mesothelioma Attorney

Question: Are certain individuals more likely to develop illness from exposure to asbestos?
Answer: Yes. There is an increased risk of developing asbestos-related illness if a person worked in an industry requiring constant, prolonged exposure. These individuals include many factory and construction workers, as well as ship builders, miners, automotive brake mechanics, and anyone else who worked with insulation materials.
There is no level of harmless exposure to asbestos. Even small doses can cause illness that becomes manifest many years later. Yet, some who worked around asbestos never develop illness. While some scientists believe that certain individuals are genetically more able to withstand exposure, no one has been able to identify an asbestos-resistant gene.
Question: Asbestos has not been widely used since the 1970's. How can there be any current risk of asbestos exposure?
Answer: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that over 700,000 public buildings in this country still contain asbestos. This number includes approximately one in ten existing school buildings. Thus, the threat posed by asbestos exposure continues to haunt innocent citizens.
Question: My exposure to asbestos happened years ago. Have I run out of time to make a claim?
Answer: This is an important question. In asbestos cases, the Statute of Limitations, or time limit for making a legal claim, depends on the state in which you live. Your time to make a claim certainly starts to run, once a doctor diagnoses you with an illness. For that reason, talk with a Michigan asbestos lawyer about your rights immediately.
Question: I do not have mesothelioma, but I have been diagnosed with another form of cancer, and I was exposed to asbestos. Could the cancer be related to asbestos exposure?
Answer: Just as asbestos exposure increases the risk of lung cancer, there are also studies that link asbestos exposure to increased risk of other cancers, including cancer of the colon, kidney, larynx, pancreas, and esophagus. If you believe asbestos played a role in your illness, you should consult a doctor and contact a Michigan asbestos lawyer today.
Question: I know that the company where I used to work has declared bankruptcy, supposedly due to asbestos litigation. Should I even bother to pursue a claim?
Answer: Many law firms are fighting to challenge bankruptcies that corporations try to use as a shield against financial exposure to asbestos claims. You should talk to a Michigan asbestos lawyer by submitting a free, confidential consultation form today to determine the status of claims against the particular company that you believe is responsible for your illness.
Question: What is the difference between pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma?
Answer: Pleural mesothelioma occurs in the chest cavity and involves the lungs. It is the more common form of mesothelioma cancer. Its symptoms include chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing, and perhaps rapid weight loss or persistent fever. Because these early problems may indicate other illnesses, a doctor may have difficulty making the initial diagnosis. If you are experiencing these symptoms and believe you may have been exposed to asbestos, you should notify your health care provider immediately.
Peritoneal mesothelioma develops in the abdominal cavity. This form of mesothelioma progresses more rapidly and is more deadly. However, early diagnosis and an individual's response to treatment are important factors in combating the disease. The symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include nausea, vomiting, and swelling of the lower extremities. Individual symptoms vary and may not all be present. If you are experiencing these problems and were exposed to asbestos in the past, you should see your family physician.
Question: Does mesothelioma always mean cancer?
Answer: In very rare circumstances, it is possible to have a benign (non-cancerous) form of mesothelioma, which is known as cystic mesothelioma of the peritoneum. But in most instances, mesothelioma is a malignant disease.
Question: Just because I worked with asbestos, does that really mean that I am at higher risk of mesothelioma and other illnesses?
Answer: Unfortunately, a report in the New England Journal of Medicine indicated that asbestos workers were 344 times more likely to die from mesothelioma than the average population. Other studies also show a clear connection between asbestos exposure and serious illness.
If you or a loved one suffer from asbestos related cancer or mesothelioma cancer, talk with an experienced Michigan asbestos lawyer today.
Attorney Marya Sieminski joined the Law Offices of Sam Bernstein in 2003. She is admitted to practice law in Michigan state courts and in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduated magna cum laude from Wayne State University Law School. Marya has worked as a trial lawyer for 10 years and exclusively represented victims in personal injury litigation and in workers compensation claims. It has been linked to causing very serious health problems for people. Even though it is a good material for keeping heat in it is rarely used in the construction industry anymore due to the ill effects it can have on people that are continually exposed to it. In fact it has been deemed illegal to use in many countries for about 20 years now. Efforts have to be taken to remove it from facilities that already exist.
It really does depend on the type of asbestos that was used though. The one that seems to be the most dangerous to both humans and animals is chrysotile. Those that work in areas with this type of asbestos or that live by factories that have it have been linked to lung problems and to tumors. The fibers in the asbestos are breathed in without a person knowing and therefore they may be exposed to it without ever finding out until they become ill.
Yet many in the construction industry aren't happy with the image that asbestos has gotten in society. They feel it is a very good material to use for many projects. They want to be able to use a less concentrate of it so there with be fewer fibers in place. They believe it can be a cheaper way to get the same benefits for their projects. However, with the health risks that have been identified it simply isn't going to happen.
As a result of the controversial issues with asbestos, fiberglass has replaced it for construction purposes. They also use organic fibers instead of the harmful asbestos to get the same results. Removing asbestos from buildings and replacing it with the new materials is very costly and time consuming. Those involved in the process have to wear a mask to help prevent the harmful fibers from getting into their bodies.
Some people have become so ill due to the exposure from asbestos that they are unable to go about their normal life. They have filed lawsuits against the companies in an effort to at least get their medical expenses covered. These types of cases can draw out in the courts for a very long time if the parties can't agree on a settlement.

What is Pleural Mesothelioma?

Pleural mesothelioma is a particularly aggressive and dangerous type of cancer. It is defined as a cancer of the lining that surrounds the lungs or chest cavity. There are two main reasons why it is so dangerous. It has a very long time between initial exposure to the causative agent, almost always asbestos, and the development of symptoms. This time span can often be decades long, and many times, a diagnosis is made too late for effective treatment. Additionally, once symptoms are present in such severity that a diagnosis is sought, the cancer has reached an advanced stage.
Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma, but shares the primary cause of all other types. Asbestos is inhaled and collects inside the lungs. While most asbestos particles are eliminated by natural functions of the human body, individual fibers can migrate to the pleural lining, and initiate cancerous growth over the years. The full effects of pleural mesothelioma on society will take some time to figure, as the use of asbestos has been so widespread in preceding years.
The symptoms of pleural mesothelioma are many, but are usually caused by one of three complications. The rapid growth of a malignant tumor on the pleural lining can put tremendous pressure on the lungs. In addition, fluid can often build up in between the pleural lining and the lungs as a result of tumor growth.
Symptoms specific to the above causes can include, but are certainly not limited to dry coughing, chest pain and shortness of breath. The least significant of these symptoms, dry coughing has many causes and should generally only be considered specific to mesothelioma when other symptoms are present, or exposure to asbestos has been documented. Both chest pain and shortness of breath, however, can be indicative of many serious conditions, and should be assessed by a doctor promptly.
The third common cause for some of the more general symptoms is the body's attempt to fight the disease. These can include fever, inability to regulate the body's temperature and weight loss.
A number of screening options are available to your doctor in order to determine whether or not pleural mesothelioma is the cause of symptoms. These can include CAT scans, MRI and X-Rays. After the initial screening, if mesothelioma is still suspected, a biopsy will be performed to analyze the tissue in question. Again, there are different techniques the doctor can use in order to sample the tissue, depending on the circumstances. Generally, however, a biopsy is relatively non-invasive procedure where a piece of the tumor is removed from the patient and sent to lab. Specialists at the lab can then perform a number of different tests in order to determine the nature of the tissue.
Finally, with a positive identification as pleural mesothelioma, the doctor can then begin treatment. Radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgical removal of the cancerous areas, and clinical trials can all be utilized. The specific treatment option will generally be determined by the stage, or level of advancement, of the cancer.
While pleural mesothelioma is very treatable if caught at the earliest stages, this is often not the case due to the very general symptoms it produces. As the cancer advances into the later stages, treatment will primarily be focused on improving the patient's quality of life.

Compensation For Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma has received much publicity in recent years, due to the high number of lawsuits against companies involved with the use asbestos. Virtually all documented cases of mesothelioma stem from inhaling large amounts of asbestos material, and due to the prevalence of asbestos in many different applications, total compensation numbers have been staggering. So extensive were the number of lawsuits, the U.S. government has limited the amount of compensation one can receive, and also the conditions under which one can file a lawsuit.
Before the U.S. government passed The Fairness in Asbestos Compensation Act in 1999, one did not need to develop any signs of mesothelioma to begin litigation. One only needed to have worked in an environment where asbestos exposure occurred. Over 200,000 cases in the Federal Courts during that year alone prompted the government action. As a result, there must be a diagnosis of mesothelioma in order to file for compensation, and punitive damages are no longer awarded.
While it may seem that The Fairness in Asbestos Compensation Act was a blow to the rights of workers exposed to asbestos, in reality, it proved to be a positive for those legitimately filing to obtain compensation for mesothelioma. Because so many people were filing lawsuits where they had not actually developed mesothelioma (and therefore did not require compensation), insurance companies began to file for bankruptcy. This left those who had legitimate claims to compensation for mesothelioma without the necessary resources to fund their treatment.
The reasons why mesothelioma litigation can be difficult are twofold. First, the symptoms of this particular cancer are very non-specific, and therefore many times to not prompt those afflicted to seek medical attention as soon as they should. It can take decades to develop after the initial exposure to asbestos, but after the onset of the disease, the patient's condition can deteriorate rapidly. Second, in most states, there is a specific deadline by which you must initiate litigation involving compensation for mesothelioma that begins on the day of diagnosis.
Another aspect of mesothelioma compensation is often more difficult to face. When a relative of someone diagnosed with mesothelioma dies as a result of the cancer, a wrongful death lawsuit may be filed. Generally, the primary action that an attorney will perform to prove wrongful death will be interviewing fellow employees of the deceased, as well as supervisors and other people affiliated with the company that exposed him/her to asbestos.
Actual figures can vary wildly, depending on factors such as length and severity of exposure to asbestos, the stage of the mesothelioma, applicable state laws, and of course the goals of the person filing the lawsuit. Generally speaking, however, compensation for mesothelioma ranges between one and three million dollars, minus a contingency fee for the attorney. This fee can, of course, vary also, but usually falls between 30% and 40% of the total compensation.

Mesothelioma Therapy - What Are the Options?

Mesothelioma is an aggressive cancer that affects the membranes surrounding the internal organs of humans. When not detected until it has progressed to a late stage, it is often difficult, if not impossible to control. Adding to the particular danger of this cancer is that the symptoms are very general and non-specific. Because of this, it is often not diagnosed early enough. Exposure to asbestos is the leading cause of mesothelioma, documented in nearly all cases.
Because of its aggressive spread, you should contact your doctor as soon as you begin to suspect mesothelioma, especially if you have been exposed to asbestos at some point. You can first expect a screening from your doctor, which can include a variety of tests like X-Rays or CT scans. If these preliminary tests show any sign of mesothelioma, you can expect a long series of additional tests to rule out any other diseases.
The only definitive test for mesothelioma is a moderately invasive procedure called a biopsy. If your previous screenings come back positive, a small sample of tissue will be removed from the affected area and examined by a specialist. There are many different types and techniques of biopsy at your doctor's disposal, and he/she will select the right one depending on where the cancerous growth is located. Depending on which stage your cancer has advanced to, your Mesothelioma therapy options may be many. Mesothelioma can be classified as being in one of four stages of development.
Stage I is the earliest and very localized. If found at this stage, the prognosis can be quite good. Therapy options at this point can include surgical removal of the tumor, chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Clinical trials may also be used on a limited basis to determine the usefulness of new cancer fighting compounds.
Stage II refers to mesothelioma that has spread to other areas near the tumor. Once the cancer begins to spread, the prognosis rapidly deteriorates, however with the right treatment and mindset, hope for recovery still remains. Many of the same therapies for stage I are used for Stage II. Quite often with an individual who has stage I or stage II mesothelioma, the doctor will employ several therapies in conjunction with one another. While very effective, this can leave the patient in a very weakened state, and thus is not recommended for more advanced stages.
Stage III indicates the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes. At this point, techniques such as surgery are limited in their effectiveness, simply because of the volume of cancer in the patient. If surgery is elected during stage III or IV, it is usually to increase the quality of life for the patient. Radiation and chemotherapy can still be used at this stage as a mesothelioma therapy, however their ability to control the cancer is diminished significantly.
Stage IV is the most advanced type and is applied to cases where the cancer has spread to parts of the body far removed from the tumor. Usually, when stage IV is reached, the mesothelioma spreads to the brain and the prognosis is very low. Mesothelioma therapy options at this point are usually used to improve the patient's quality of life, although there have been cases where a patient has been responsive enough to treatment that remission is achieved.
The number one asset you have in beating this cancer has little to do with choosing your mesothelioma therapy, but is catching your disease early. More than the different techniques used to combat the cancer, the early discovery of it can determine your prognosis.

Asbestos Attorney

For those that have been suffering due to exposure to asbestos, it can be a long road to recovery. If you have developed cancerous tumors from it you may never recover due to the amount of damage done to your lungs. You have a right to seek financial and medical compensation due to it. This is especially true if the fact that asbestos was in the area was known but never disclosed.
These types of cases can be very long and drawn out in a court of law. It can take years to get the case resolved. To help speed things along you should secure the assistance of an attorney that specializes in asbestos related cases. They can help you get the compensation you deserve. In most cases they will be willing to settle for a percentage of what you get. Therefore if you don't win the case you won't be out thousands of dollars that you had to pay to the attorney.
Depending on the facts of the case, it may be possible to get an out of court settlement. For example if the asbestos was found at a place of employment they may be willing to settle to keep the media attention away from it. With so much information today about the link with asbestos and health issues, most of these businesses also know they will lose in a court of law.
Take your time to find the very best representation for your case. An attorney that specializes in this area will be able to help you get through the process. They will know what medical information you need and what you can expect. This way you can understand what the entire process is going to entail. You don't want a basic attorney that will be learning right along side of you.
Always take advantage of free consultations that are offered out there. This way you can take some time to talk to an asbestos attorney. You want to find out if they think you have a case, fees, and how well they communicate with you. If you aren't sold on what they have to offer then keep looking for better representation.

Asbestos Testing

In order to determine if asbestos is present in a given location the materials have to be tested. They are collected and then sent to a laboratory for the testing to be completed. If the tests are positive then measures are taken to secure the area until the removal process can be implemented and completed. For many people, knowing where to look for asbestos is very important too. In older homes you may not even realize it is a factor to be concerned about.
Asbestos was once very popular as a type of insulation. This is the first place you want to take your test samples from. Don't forget to look into the various heat ducts as well. Some other places where asbestos may be lurking include the fireplace, around wiring housing, the furnace, and around your plumbing pipes. It is a good idea to wear all the gear for removing asbestos as a precaution while you are collection samples.
You will want to hire a professional to come into your home and to look around for the asbestos in most cases though. They will know where to look and what to look for. The general homeowner doesn't have this type of knowledge to reflect upon. You should be able to contact your local health department in order to identify such professionals in your area to complete the work for you.
There are many different times when you should decide to do asbestos testing. If you live in a home that was built before 1980 it may not have been tested before. Finding out if you have asbestos in the area or not can give you peace of mind. You certainly don't want to risk exposing your family to the harmful effects. You also don't want to lie awake at night wondering if it is present or not.
Always complete an asbestos test before you begin any type of remodeling or if you are tearing down something. These types of activities can result in the fibers associated with asbestos to become loose. This is when they will be in the air that you breathe. Always pay close attention to the results of the asbestos testing so you can eliminate the risk.

Have You Been Exposed to Asbestos While Working?

Mesothelioma is a particularly aggressive and dangerous form of cancer. Nearly all cases of mesothelioma are caused by a person being exposed to asbestos while working. It is such a dangerous form of cancer for two main reasons. It can take decades after asbestos exposure for symptoms to show, and once symptoms are present, it advances very quickly with devastating results. One can take solace in the fact that, even if exposed to asbestos, mesothelioma is still a fairly rare disease.
Before it was discovered that those exposed to asbestos while working were at a higher risk of developing mesothelioma, asbestos was widely used in many industries with good reason. A cluster of long, fibrous minerals, asbestos exhibits many traits that lend themselves well to many applications. These traits include its chemical inertness, resistance to heat & electricity, sound absorption and physical strength. First discovered in the late 1800s, it's use was widespread until the 1980s, when countries began to legislate against its use in nearly all applications. It is still somewhat of a mystery as to the exact action on human tissue which causes asbestos to influence cancerous growth.
Depending on the specific type of mesothelioma, cancerous cells will begin to grow in the lining of different organs or organ groups. When these cells reach a certain amount, they can increase the amount of fluid produced by these membranes, resulting in a number of general symptoms. When present in the pericardium, the lining of the heart, symptoms can include chest pain, and sensations similar to palpitations. When present in the pleura, the membrane surrounding the lungs, symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest pain and dry coughing are often present. A cancerous growth in the peritoneal membrane, the lining of the abdominal organs, can result in nausea, loss of appetite, bowel obstruction and abdominal pain. If allowed to progress untreated, the cancer will generally spread to nearby areas on the effected membrane, then to the lymph nodes, and finally to organs away from the point of origin.
After mesothelioma is suspected, a doctor will typically run a series of screenings to eliminate or more firmly cement the possibility. These can include CAT scans, MRI, and X-Rays. Next, a biopsy will be performed, and if mesothelioma is confirmed, the doctor will determine how advanced the cancer is. Beyond stage I, it is often extremely difficult to control the disease.
There are several options available for compensation if one has been exposed to asbestos while working and consequently developed mesothelioma. Class action lawsuits are one such option. Another route for compensation is to litigate as an individual. For families who have lost someone to mesothelioma, wrongful death lawsuits are often an option. If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, it is imperative to retain an attorney as soon as possible, as many states have limitations on how long you have to initiate litigation.

Mesothelioma Symptoms and Signs

The symptoms and signs of mesothelioma are often confused with other diseases, as they are very general and non-specific. Because of this, along with its aggressive nature, mesothelioma often leads to a very grim prognosis. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your doctor.
Pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma are the two most common forms of this cancer. Peritoneal mesothelioma indicates cancer that has begun to grow in the lining of the abdominal organs or cavity. Pleural Mesothelioma is a cancer that grows in the lining of the lungs and chest cavity. These two forms of mesothelioma are very distinct and therefore, their symptoms and signs are also unique.
Peritoneal mesothelioma is the least common form. Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma include weight loss, blockage of the colon, problems with blood clotting, fever, and moderate to severe pain in the abdominal area.
The more common pleural mesothelioma can include symptoms such as weight loss, coughing fits, fever, inability to control temperature, chest pains, and difficulty breathing. While symptoms of both types of mesothelioma are very general, it is important to rule it out if you are at risk.
There are a few different paths that your doctor may take in deciding whether or not you are indeed afflicted with mesothelioma. After presenting him/her with your symptoms and signs, your doctor may perform any number of tests, including CAT scans, X-Rays, or an MRI. A CAT scan is basically an advanced form of computer aided X-Ray that allows a doctor to see more clearly the internal organs of the patient. During an MRI, or magnetic resonance imaging, a doctor will be able to clearly see any abnormalities in the affected area. Many times, these three methods are used in tandem for the clearest picture.
Should your doctor detect a tumor or other suspicious growth using the above imaging technologies, he/she will want to perform a biopsy. There are several types of biopsies, as well. They range from the non-invasive technique of extracting a small amount of liquid from the growth using a small needle, to a minor surgery, removing a significant portion of the growth.
Because mesothelioma is such an aggressive cancer, it is of the utmost importance that you seek medical advice if any of the symptoms and signs are present. While the majority of symptoms will turn out to be something far more benign in nature than mesothelioma it would be unwise to chance it. Your odds of beating mesothelioma increase dramatically if it is detected earlier.

Why The Mesothelioma Law is Vital

Mesothelioma law is very vital and it provides a chance for a victim or a person who has been exposed to asbestos, to claim compensation that will ease their troubles. The laws are very specific and clear and they can be used by a person who has discovered they might have had an exposure or by a person who has just been diagnosed with the fatal disease. The mesothelioma law will compensate for pain, suffering, medical costs and other related expenses and it will also cover the possible loss of an income. Firstly, it is vital to establish what exactly mesothelioma is and who are at risk of getting it. Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the mesothelium which is the lining of various organs like the heart, lungs and abdomen. The known cause of the illness is asbestos.
Asbestos is a group of minerals that are found naturally which are mostly used as insulators due to their incredible properties which include the following. They are resistant to both heat and fire which have earned them the name of a miracal mineral. It is used to make so many products and the following are some of the industries you will find it being used in automotive, building, construction, railroad, factory, shipyard and so many other industries. People who work in asbestos mines are probably at a bigger risk. You can find other laws under the mesothelioma laws which include the personal injury law. You can seek compensation for your loss because of a person who was negligent and caused your problems.
There are so many aspects to the law on mesothelioma and you need to know all you can so that you can make the correct decision. The person who is better placed to guide you is a mesothelioma lawyer or attorney. They will show you which direction to follow if you wish to undertake a legal suit. They must therefore have the proper qualification and experience. They should have proof of a valid license to practice. This is because the mesothelioma cases that have succeeded, have gotten a lot of money and people are willing to fake their qualifications and act as middlemen so that they can gain in the end. Consider a lawyer who is near you. This will go a long way to make your work easier as you start to prepare for the case.
They should have evidence of the cases they have handled successfully so that you can totally put your trust in them. The case is very vital and you therefore need to take as much time as you can to make sure that you have a lawyer who is dedicated to your case. The lawyer will explain everything about the mesothelioma law and guide you towards making the right decision. When you have any concern or question, they will take you through. The other vital aspect you need to consider is that you must agree on the lawyer fee before you hire them. The stake is high and you want a price that will satisfy everyone. When you are content with the lawyer and your terms of agreement, go ahead with the case to the very end.

This is What Mesothelioma is About

If you are wondering what is mesothelioma, you will not be happy to know that it is a disease that is often fatal. This is the person who has filed the legal suit against a particular company or corporation. When you have suffered because of the exposure to asbestos, you have the legal right to file a suit against the company you might have been working for at the time of the incident. This is because the natural mineral has been known to cause a cancer that is very fatal which is referred to as mesothelioma. The people who are more likely to suffer from the illness include factory workers, mine workers, shipyard workers and the list is endless. Asbestos is used to make so many products for the household and factories and it can make up to 3,000 products. The substance is a very good insulator and this is the reason why it is so popular to manufacturers.
Mesothelioma is a disease that will affect your lungs, heart and abdomen the most common being the kind that affects the lungs and abdomen. When the asbestos gets into your system mainly through inhalation, it sticks to your body and is ingested in your system. The problems with mesothelioma might be experienced up to 30 or 40 years later. It is therefore very vital to ask yourself whether in your lifetime, you might have had the exposure even if it is for a very short time. This will empower you to know that if you got sick, you can pursue the case legally and get good mesothelioma settlements. If you continue to work in such an environment where you have the presence of asbestos, it is up to you to decide the course of action you are going to take to ensure that the company realizes the importance of safety from asbestos.
When you work without protective clothing, you risk infecting your family because the quantity of asbestos fibers in your cloths can do enough harm to them. Companies have been declared bankrupt with the increase of this cases. More and more people are starting to feel the effects of the exposure from many years ago and mesothelioma settlements continue to be made every now and then. There are several factors that are considered when mesothelioma settlements are being made and they include the following. The laws in your state will matter a lot and they determine the legality of your mesothelioma settlements. Before the settlements are made, the parties responsible must be considered and they may be companies or individuals.
If the mesothelioma ordeal facilitated the loss of your job, then this must be considered and when this is done, you will get the appropriate amount that can support your family comfortably. The other factor that is vital is the extent of your injuries and the more the injuries, the more you expect from the settlement. If the injury is very serious you also expect more. This is the reason why these cases have a lot of money riding on them. Mesothelioma cases are usually very serious. Another factor that will determine the settlement is how well the case was presented by the mesothelioma attorney. The internet is full of cases where you can get to see the exact amounts of the settlements.

This is What Mesothelioma Lawsuits Settlements Mean

Mesothelioma lawsuits are legal suits filed by people who have been affected by the deadly disease of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is caused by a toxic substance called asbestos and it can be found in many working situations especially in construction and in building. The asbestos is very useful when it comes to making products and it is an insulator. Many companies therefore used the substance with the knowledge that it was harmful and this negligence enables victims to seek their right of compensation, when they are affected. Many mesothelioma lawsuits have been made by people who got exposed in the 60s and 70s. This is so because the latency period of the disease is very high and many people have the potential of developing a disease if they were exposed.
They inhalation or ingestion of the substance will see it logged in your system for a very long time then it can react with your cells making them, multiply abnormally and therefore developing this form of cancer. Mesothelioma lawsuits produce settlements that run into millions. The reason for this is because the cancer is very serious and it could mean life or death for an affected person. The cancer affects the lungs and the abdomen and the conditions are called pleural mesothelioma and peritoneal mesothelioma consecutively. The people who are at a higher risk of developing the disease work in the sectors and industries where asbestos is handled. It is the responsibility of a company or an individual who has employed workers to provide a safe working environment.
There are class action law suits that the manufacturing companies had filed to ensure that victims who continue to surprise them with mesothelioma lawsuits are barred from making their claim. However, on two occasions, this class actions have been denied and every one who realizes they have the disease, can comfortably file a mesothelioma lawsuit to have their justice served. When you are thinking of filing a mesothelioma lawsuit, you need to make use of a good mesothelioma lawyer who will explain to you what is expected of you. Many people have gone ahead to win cases thanks to the experience and expertise of their lawyers. Take time and search for a lawyer who will be able to deliver.
There are several qualities you look for in a good attorney and the first one which is very vital is whether they are qualified and licensed to practice. Any lawyer who does not meet this conditions is not good for your lawsuit. They must be easily accessible and this means that they must not live very far from your location. They must display a deep knowledge on the issue and this is part of competence. It will take experience in dealing with the lawsuits to land you on a positive ruling. Their experience will therefore be invaluable. Make sure you do not delay when you realize you have the disease, check with your state laws to ensure that you are right on track.

This Is What The Mesothelioma Prognosis Entails

When you notice the symptoms of mesothelioma in your body, the place you go to is to see the doctor who can then run the various tests to confirm the diagnosis. When you realize that indeed you do have the disease, you ask the doctor a vital question which will change your whole outlook on life as you know it. You ask what the mesothelioma prognosis is. The doctor will take some time to explain how exactly the illness occurs and the possibilities for treatment before they get to the point. Prognosis for mesothelioma is usually not very good. A prognosis is the chance or hope for recovery. It is the prediction according to the stage of the disease in your body, of how the outcome of the illness will be in regard to your body.
Mesothelioma prognosis is often described as the recovery chance of a patient. The prognosis is very poor because when the illness is discovered, it is usually very advanced and all that can be done is to treat the discomfort and discourage the cancer from spreading. All this is according to the statistics that are available. There is not confirmations or details that can confirm the statics and it is often left to very individual cases to judge the outcome in other people. One thing that seems to be a fact though is the low survival rate. Many patients may not feel comfortable going through this facts because it might seem hopeless to fight on.
Each case has its uniqueness and people have been reported to survive for over 10 years when they were given 1 year to live. It is also a fact that there is always hope for every patient. According to the statistics, only about 20 cases of all the reported cases manage to survive. Some factors like the kind of treatment they are undergoing play a major part in helping prolong life and patients should go for every medical opportunity available. There are constant studies being undertaken to come up with a cure or a better treatment for mesothelioma and the experts state that the future of mesothelioma prognosis looks bright. Some patients often opt to take medications on trial and this can help some people.
Nobody can really give an accurate mesothelioma prognosis and keeping a positive attitude will boost your immunity and give you strength to face the future with confidence. Apart from the stage of the cancer you are at, your general well being will also contribute to the mesothelioma prognosis. If your are in good health, then you might respond to treatment better than people whose immune systems are compromised. Another factor that might affect the prognosis is where the cancer is located and this means that it might be of the lungs or the abdomen. All in all, you might be mislead by statistics and it will be vital to consider your case individually and see how best you are going to overcome the problem. The key is keeping in mind that even with a poor prognosis, your case can be unique and better.

Some of the Many Symptoms of Asbestos Mesothelioma

Asbestos mesothelioma is the most common form of mesothelioma illness today. Like many other types of cancer, many of the causes remain unknown but, asbestos has been found to contribute to the formation of abnormal cells on the cells that cover many organs including the lungs, heart and intestines. It was only until the 1960s that the connection was really made between asbestos and mesothelioma. In the beginning, the asbestos was only linked to lung disease. Asbestos mesothelioma continues to be a rare disease but, more and more cases are being diagnosed every year. In the United States, about 2,000 cases are diagnosed while in the UK there are about 2,100 cases of asbestos mesothelioma per year. Asbestos is the name given to a group of minerals that occur naturally. They are resistant to heat and fire and are therefore used as insulators.
Asbestos is mainly used in the following industries telephone exchanges, power stations, motor industry, household appliances industry, ship building and in the building industry. Asbestos mesothelioma may not develop until many years after exposure and the years could be 30 to 50 years. Asbestos comes in various categories and you will find blue, brown and white asbestos. The blue and brown ones were mostly associated with the disease and they were consequently banned in many countries including the UK. The white asbestos is now thought to be harmful as well. The substance is made up of very strong fibers and they can be airborne where someone can inhales them. The body is unable to expel them and they are stuck in the lungs and sometimes swallowed. When they stay in your system, they will start affecting your cells and slowly cause the cancer.
There are very many symptoms of asbestos mesothelioma depending on the organ the disease affects and when they affect the lungs, you will have a build up of fluid which will make you breathless even when you are at a resting position. The disease is also characterized by pain and the inability to swallow. This will in turn lead to a lack of appetite and you can lose a lot of weight. When the disease affects the abdomen, you will experience discomfort, bloating and bowel obstruction. You will also have poor digestion and nutrients might not reach your system in the right way and therefore your immunity will be highly compromised. It is not so easy to make a diagnosis of the disease but, a chest x ray or of the affected area will reveal the illness. Further, a biopsy may be necessary to determine whether the cells are cancerous.
Your medical history and the history of exposure to asbestos will also be key to establishing whether you have the mesothelioma that is caused by asbestos. If you have the disease, there is treatment available and it will be determined by the location of the cancer. Other things that will determine the treatment are how far the cancer has spread. You can have surgery, radiation or even chemotherapy for the elimination of the disease. Make sure you go to a health facility if you suspect to have the condition.

How to Deal With a Mesothelioma Lawsuit

A mesothelioma lawsuit is a legal claim filed by a victim seeking justice for all the medical bills, loss of an income, pain and suffering they experienced throughout the ordeal. There are many mesothelioma lawsuits that continue to be filed by people who were exposed to the substance called asbestos in their working experience. Firstly, mesothelioma is a cancer that is caused by the exposure to a natural mineral referred to as asbestos and it is used in industries to make so many products and in fact, over 3,000 products can be made from the substance. The companies that hire workers have a moral responsibility to inform and protect workers from such hazards and when they fail to do so, they definitely have a case to answer.
The disease is quite unique and you can have the exposure to asbestos and stay for over 30 years before the disease develops. Therefore, people who were exposed in the 60s and 70s find themselves suffering form it and hence the need to file a mesothelioma lawsuit. The people who are at risk to getting this disease are the ones who work closely with the substance and this can be in asbestos mines, building industry, household appliances industry, ship making industries and the list goes on. They are constantly inhaling the product and it is trapped in their lungs and sometimes swallowed. Its very strong fibers make it hard for it to be expelled from the body and the victim will not realize this until it is too late.
The workers will also risk exposing their families if they carry particles of the substance on their cloths. After there was the realization that the substance was harmful in the late 60s, more caution was taken and workers were informed and advised on the best way to avert the danger. In the United States, there were restrictions put in place and there is an amount of asbestos that is supposed to be exposed to the workers and, before they go home, they make sure that they have taken a shower and changed their cloths. Mesothelioma is known to affect the mesothelial lining which covers the lungs, heart and abdomen. It enables abnormal multiplication of cells which is also known as cancer. The disease can be very fatal especially when it has spread to many area of the body.
A mesothelioma lawsuit is therefore very vital and it may not totally ease your pain but, it will see to it that your medical bills are paid and that you do not have to worry about providing for your family. The first thing you do if you wish to file a mesothelioma lawsuit is to make sure that you have the presence of the disease confirmed by a qualified doctor. Then, you need the services of a good mesothelioma lawyer who will shed light into your rights and how you will go about starting the process. You should not waste a lot of time because in some states, there is a laid out time period when you are supposed to file your case. Your lawyer will give you all the details about the law in your state. Therefore, you need to find an attorney who you can confidently place your case on their able hands.

How Mesothelioma Treatment is Done

Because there is no known cure for mesothelioma yet, there are various things that are done to slow the progression of the cancer and to sometimes eliminate the cancer that has already formed. This is called mesothelioma treatment and if you have discovered you have the disease, it is not the end because you can fight the illness with the facilities and drugs available. Firstly, if you are not familiar with mesothelioma, it is a cancer that is caused by the exposure to toxic substances called asbestos. They are used in many industries and there, people can be exposed to it. After many years, the symptoms of the disease start to show. Some of the working places that asbestos is likely to be found are ship yards, asbestos mines, construction sites, manufacturing industries and so many others.
One example of mesothelioma treatment is surgery. This involves getting to the affected area and removing the tumors that may have formed. This will go a long way in eliminating all the symptoms if it is a success. Not everyone qualifies for surgery because there are many factor that the doctor will have to consider including how far the cancer has spread, your medical history and other factors. The mesothelioma treatment can be undertaken as multi modal therapy. This means that it can be done alongside other treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. They will help eliminate most cancerous cells, slowing down the development of the disease.
If the disease has affected the lungs, it is called pleural mesothelioma and the surgical procedure done to drain the fluid that has formed is called thoracentesis. This treatment is palliative which means that it helps reduce the discomfort in the patient. There are very many other surgical procedures that can be undertaken to ensure that the patient is comfortable. When the disease affects the lining of the abdomen it is called peritoneal mesothelioma. A mesothelioma treatment which can be performed surgically is paracentesis. There are other surgeries that can be performed depending on the extent of the disease and the individual patient. Let a doctor explain to you about all these procedures and advise you on the best for you if you need treatment.
Another mesothelioma treatment is chemotherapy and this is basically the use of drugs to kill the cancer cell in the body. This treatment leaves many patients weak because of the following reason. The drugs will target all the cell that are actively dividing including the healthy cell like the ones that help in immunity. Therefore, they will have a weakened immune system, the patients will not have energy when the treatment starts to have effect on the body. They will experience hair loss because the hair cells are being destroyed. Another mesothelioma treatment is the use of a very powerful x ray and this is referred to as radiation. Many weak patients are treated with this method and the cancer is delayed from progressing. Therefore, if you have the illness, do not dismiss this treatments because they will do so much for you.

The Danger of Asbestos

Asbestos is the collective term used to describe a family of several types of mineral fibrous rocks. There are currently six different regulated types of asbestos, with the three main types being Crocidolite, Amosite and Chrysolite.
Crocidolite which is usually blue can be found a lot in southern Africa, Australia and in Russia. The Amosite which is usually brown is most commonly found in Africa. The Chrysolite is of a white colour and can be found in different places all around the world. All those three types were actually imported a lot in the United Kingdom before being banned from use in the eighties for some and at the end of the nineties for others.
Asbestos fibres have been incorporated into many different materials and especially building materials since the end of the nineteenth century because of their useful properties. It was used as an acoustic insulator, a thermal insulator but also as fire proofing. The mineral fibre was actually known by the ancient Greek who recognized certain hazards of it. But its disadvantage is that it is a highly toxic material and can cause serious illnesses such as mesothelioma and asbestosis.
Asbestos fibres can be easily inhaled and can become lodged in the tissue of your chest and as a result, your body's natural defenses may not be able to break them down. This can then lead to lung diseases and cancer especially if you are exposed to the fibres repeatedly over a certain number of years.
Even though the white asbestos, also called chrysolite, is still used a lot in the United States and known as less dangerous as the other types of asbestos, it can still cause cancer in humans but with some uncertainty as to the scale of the risk involved there.
The first death recorded as related to asbestos occurred in 1906 and at the same period, scientists started to notice a large number of deaths and lung diseases in asbestos mining towns. The British Lung Foundation carried out a survey recently that revealed that most tradespeople were actually unaware of the health risks posed by asbestos, and that they did not think about asking if there was any asbestos on the site they were working on.
Today, the best way to find out if there is asbestos in a building is to ask a company to carry out asbestos surveys. More and more companies have actually specialized in asbestos surveys as well as asbestos risk assessment and legionella risk assessment.

Developing Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a fairly rare cancer that can lead to a malignant tumor and is associated with prior exposure to asbestos. The exposure could have been 20 to even 50 years ago and only now will symptoms start to appear. Mesothelioma can develop in mesothelial cells in the pleura, pericardium, and peritoneum.
The pleura is the outer lining that surrounds your lungs. This lining lets your lungs have flexibility when you breathe in or out. After exposure to asbestos, a tumor may eventually develop in this area creating what is known as pleural mesothelioma. This is common if asbestos material has been inhaled either by mining it or working in a factory that uses it in a product.
The pericardium contains all of the hearts blood vessels and arteries. This membrane separates the heart from the rest of the chest cavity and ensures it has greater protection. Occasionally, asbestos can go from the lungs to the heart through the bloodstream and tumors can develop. This is a very dangerous place for a tumor to develop and is known as pericardial mesothelioma.
The peritoneum is the large outer lining that protects all of the organs in your abdominal cavity. This is the least likely place for a tumor to develop from asbestos but is very dangerous if it does occur. This is known as peritoneal mesothelioma.
If you or someone you know have ever been around anyone who worked with asbestos, it couldn't hurt to tell your doctor and have some tests run. Mesothelioma is treatable like most cancer and surgery and chemotherapy are just a couple of the available options.

Mesothelioma - Are You at Risk?

Mesothelioma is a relatively rare type of cancer that occurs when cancerous cells grow in the mesothelium. The mesothelium is a protective lining that is on most of your internal organs. Typically, mesothelioma is attributed to asbestos exposure when someone inhales particles and they become lodged in the lungs.
To be in the "at risk" category, odds are you had to have come into contact with asbestos at one time or another. Asbestos is a mass of flexible fibrous material that is naturally found in the Earth.
For many years it was used in common goods such as shingles, brake pads, cement, flooring, and insulation. The mining process as well as the plants that manufactured products containing asbestos are the top contributors to mesothelioma.
Unfortunately, many more people come into contact than just the laborers. Their families are at great risk because the particles come home on clothing and can get all over the place. Laundry is a big factor. Anyone who has handled the clothing of the workers is at risk as well. This includes commercial laundry facilities as well as homes.
Asbestos was almost completely banned in 1989 but it has been in use since the late 1800s and peaked with World War II. Mesothelioma takes anywhere from 20 to 50 years to show up so many people today are feeling the effects of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. An X-ray, CT scan, or MRI can tell you if you have mesothelioma. If you have ever been around asbestos, it's a good idea to mention that to your physician.
Asbestos provides detailed information about asbestos, asbestos and mesothelioma, asbestos cancer, asbestos exposure and more.

Mesothelioma Symptoms

There are different types of Mesothelioma depending on the organ affected and these different types of result in different symptoms. In this article we will consider the symptoms of pleural and peritoneal Mesothelioma.
Symptoms of Pleural Mesothelioma
This affects the lungs and results in chest pain, coughing, and difficulty breathing. A common symptom experienced by those suffering from Pleural Mesothelioma is also a build up of fluid between the parietal pleura and visceral pleura in the chest. These symptoms are often not picked up early in the disease. This is the most common form of Mesothelioma with 75 percent of the cases.
Symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma
This affects the stomach and results in abdominal pain, loss of appetite, weight loss, bowel problems nausea and fluid retention. This form is not as common as pleural Mesothelioma but the symptoms normally show up quicker after asbestos-exposure than for the pleural type.
Similarities and Differences
Pleural and peritoneal Mesothelioma are both malignant cancers that are caused primarily due to exposure to asbestos. The symptoms normally do not show up for many years after this exposure though with the average being 20-30 years after exposure for peritoneal Mesothelioma and 30-40 years for pleural Mesothelioma.
The symptoms of pleural and peritoneal Mesothelioma usually occur years after exposure to asbestos and vary depending on the organ that is affected with pleural symptoms being in the chest and breathing related, and peritoneal symptoms relating to the appetite, bowel movements and abdomen. Ultimately both types are malignant and more often than not result in death.

Mesothelioma Settlement

A mesothelioma settlement is very vital to the plaintiff because when it is fair, it saves a lot of time and heartache. A mesothelioma settlement is a resolution of a mesothelioma case, without the need to go to trial. Firstly, you must be aware of what exactly a mesothelioma case is. Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer which affects the protective lining of the lungs, abdomen and heart. The protective lining is known as the mesothelium. The disease is known to be caused by the exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral which has been used for a very long time to make various products. The substance is fire resistant and this is an essential property because it acts as an insulator. Some of the products it made are cloths, gloves and the list goes on.
The noise deadening quality of asbestos saw it very useful in the construction of floors, ceiling and tiles. It is said that buildings that were built before 1978 might have traces of asbestos in them. The asbestos is dangerous when its fibers are released into the air and they are easily inhaled. The are tiny and invisible therefore making it hard for anyone to detect them. The fibers once in the system, stay for a very long time before the disease emerges. They cause the cells to change and eventually become cancerous. The latency period can range from 30 to 50 years. When a diagnosis is made, it is usually very late and the prognosis does not look good at all. A victim can however seek legal solace by filing a legal suit against the manufacturing company.
They might land on a mesothelioma settlement that is good so that they cannot proceed with the trial in court. Usually, every case is very unique and the settlement agreement depends on several factors. Some of the factors include the extent of the damage caused as a result of exposure to asbestos. If the case is very severe, the compensation is supposed to match the extent of the damage. Nothing can match the disease but, special consideration is taken for people who might have suffered severely. The other factor that is very vital is the specific laws of a state or country. The political climate affects how a mesothelioma settlement is going to go. This is because of the legislation in the particular issue of mesothelioma.
A mesothelioma settlement involves a lot of money which can run into millions, for this reason, mesothelioma lawyers are always on the front line seeking any victim to represent or to help enable a mesothelioma settlement. Because of the seriousness of the illness, many cases that settle see the compensation go to the survivors of the victim. This is because the victim is usually gone and, the legal suit is filed to compensate for the loss of life, pain and suffering caused by the disease. It is alarming to know that before the compensation is done, victims are usually gone. It is advisable to know your legal rights so that you can act quickly when you realize you might have the disease.

Mesothelioma Diagnosis

A mesothelioma diagnosis is very difficult and it involves a series of tests to establish whether the illness is indeed mesothelioma. Even before you have gone to a health specialist, there are specific symptoms that you should look out for in order to have some idea of the disease you might be suffering from. The symptoms in the lungs include shortness of breath, pain in the chest, pain in the throat, lack of appetite, weight loss and the symptoms are many. Peritoneal mesothelioma which is the mesothelioma that affects the abdomen may present with swelling in the abdominal area, build up of fluid, nausea, weight loss, swelling of feet, bowel obstruction and the list goes on. Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the lining of vital organs like heart lungs and abdomen called the mesothelium.
The known cause of the disease is asbestos which is a natural mineral used in various industries to produce various products. The people who find themselves suffering from the disease must have come into contact with the substance at their working stations. Therefore, when a mesothelioma diagnosis is being made, you must give your asbestos history and if you have ever worked on a shipyard, construction site, asbestos mines and other industries that might handled asbestos, you will have to state this clearly to the doctor. When you are exposed to asbestos, it does not matter the duration because the microscopic fibers are enough to cause the disease after its latency period.
Latency period is the time the asbestos takes to affect the cells so that they can become cancerous. It takes a very long time and it could be 30 to 50 years after your exposure. Usually, when you experience the symptoms, you will go for mesothelioma diagnosis which might be too late for your condition. It is advisable to seek medical opinion if you have ever suspected exposure to asbestos in your life. This will assist in making an early mesothelioma diagnosis. You need to empower yourself with necessary information so that you can be in a position to make wise decisions. Some of the steps that a doctor will take to make a mesothelioma diagnosis include the following.
The first thing will be giving your complete asbestos history. There will be x rays performed on your chest or abdomen. Other scans will be undertaken to find out conclusively whether you have the illness. An example of the scan that will be undertaken is computer tomography. Another scan that will be helpful is the magnetic resonance imaging. The scan will determine the extent of the tumor. A biopsy is very vital and it is performed by taking a sample of the tumor to determine whether the cells are cancerous or not. When you have a confirmation that you have the mesothelioma illness, you do not have to stop at that because your doctor will inform you that there are treatments which can make your life easier. Some of the treatment options include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. You need to stay positive so that you can fight the disease.

Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

When people talk of pleural mesothelioma they are really talking about malignant pleural mesothelioma and this is because most of the cases are malignant. Malignancy describes the cells implying that they are cancerous. Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a cancer caused by natural minerals known as asbestos. The specific cancer affects the mesothelium lining or cover which serves a protective role around the chest cavity and others. People who are at risk of suffering from the disease have had an exposure to asbestos at a particular time in their lives. The work situation that might have exposed somebody to asbestos include asbestos mining, construction industries, shipyards and other work situations. The asbestos is used to produce more that 3,000 products but, it has been banned in many states and restrictions put against its use.
It was so popular because of its incredible properties which make it an insulator. It is resistant to heat and fire and, fire resistant clothing would be produced from it. Its fibers when airborne can be inhaled and once they enter the human system, they are not expelled and when you stay for a long time with the fibers logged in your system, you are likely to develop malignant pleural mesothelioma. The disease has a very long latency period which could even take up to 30 years to show its manifestation. The disease comes with various symptoms which you can look out for if you suspect to have the illness. The signs include shortness of breath, chest pains, build up of fluid, swelling of the neck, lack of appetite and weight loss.
Malignant pleural mesothelioma has very severe symptoms and by the time you start experiencing the symptoms, the disease might have developed to a level that is alarming. You should therefore make a point of visiting a health professional to make sure the condition is caught early. Do not conclude that you have the disease when a proper malignant pleural mesothelioma diagnosis has not been done. There are so many other conditions that manifest themselves in this way one example being pneumonia. Go through the various vital tests so that you can know for sure the condition you have. Some of the tests that you will undergo to determine whether you have the illness are a biopsy, x rays and other scans.
When you find out that you have malignant pleural mesothelioma, you can look into the legal provision where you can get a compensation. There are many mesothelioma cases that continue to be compensated because the company they were working for did not take the time to inform them of the danger. There are also treatment options to help slow down the development of the disease. If the disease has not spread considerably, you might consider surgery. It is undertaken together with other treatments like chemotherapy and radiation. Chemotherapy involves the use of drugs to kill the cancer cells and, it can be effective. It comes with side effects which include weakness in a the patient. This is because the treatment kills even good cells of the body.

Mesothelioma Lung Cancer

Mesothelioma lung cancer is also referred to as pleural mesothelioma and it is the leading cause of death in cases related to asbestos exposure followed by the cancer affecting the abdomen known as peritoneal mesothelioma. If you are not familiar with asbestos and mesothelioma, you need to take time and perform a thorough search on the internet that will reveal so much. Asbestos is a group of fibrous minerals which occur naturally. The minerals are used to produce so many products in industries. It was used in ceilings, floors, crutch and brake parts, shipyards and so many others. When the asbestos fibers break lose, they become airborne and people around are likely to inhale. Once the fibers are in your system, they stay for a long time until the disease starts to manifest.
The disease can take 30 to 50 years before it is active. Therefore workers who are exposed to the substance are at a very high risk of being exposed and they may also pass it to their families through their cloths. The workers include those who work in steel, plumbing, milling, mining, insulation and workers of other industries who deal with asbestos as well. There are very many symptoms of mesothelioma lung cancer and they include the following. Difficulty in breathing, shortness of breath, chest pains that do not go away, coughing, anemia and others. The affected area is the protective lining referred to as the mesothelium.
There are other illnesses that present themselves in a similar way so you need to visit a health professional who will rule others out. The diagnosis of mesothelioma lung cancer is very difficult and you have to undergo a couple of tests before there is conclusive evidence that you have the disease. The first that is very vital to give your doctor is your asbestos history. You will be required to specify where you could have been exposed. Some people realize that they got it from relatives who worked in industries using asbestos. Therefore you need to go back in history and make sure it is as clear as possible so that the diagnosis can be made fast with ease.
When you have mesothelioma lung cancer, there are treatments that are available to help contain the disease. If you have a condition of that is not so advanced your chance of recovery is very high. Some of the options that will make you better are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. If the disease is very advanced, you can also consider the above treatments because they will derail the advancement of the disease. Asbestos is the known cause of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the protective lining of the lungs, heart and abdomen. It is a very fatal illness and the prognosis is not good at all. It has been found that when a person is diagnosed to have the disease, they usually have at least two years to live. This is for patients who have a very advanced case of the disease. Asbestos is responsible for all this and it is a substance that is very useful as an insulator making products that are fire and heat resistant. It is a substance that occurs naturally and it has been said to be a miracle mineral. This is because it is resistant to heat and fire. It has continued to cause so much devastation to victims.
Asbestos and mesothelioma information can be found on the internet in much more detail to enable you know all about the illness. Workers who work in the following industries are at a very high risk of asbestos exposure. The industries are building construction, ship construction, asbestos mining industries and the list is endless. Some people who live in houses that were constructed before 1978 will have traces of asbestos in their homes. There are many groups which are involved in providing awareness for the harmful substance and their main concern is on how to help people identify asbestos. The substance is not only odorless but is also tasteless. It enters the human body when it is airborne and this happens when the asbestos is loosely released where its fibers will be inhaled attach themselves on the lungs and the entire mesothelium.
Asbestos and mesothelioma topic has been debated for a very long time. This has seen legislation put in place to protect victims. Victims have maintained their right to sue the companies they worked for despite some companies filing class action lawsuits barring victims from fighting for their rights. When the mesothelioma affects the lungs, it is called pleural mesothelioma. When it affects the abdomen, it is referred to as peritoneal mesothelioma. There are many symptoms that you can look out for when you are affected by the disease. When you have pleural mesothelioma, a lot of fluid will build up in your system and you will experience difficulty in breathing, you will have severe chest pains and many others.
Usually, when you experience the symptoms, it will be many years after you got the exposure to asbestos. When you visit the doctor, he will express his concern about asbestos and mesothelioma. You have to give your asbestos history and if you think you do not have any, try to think of someone who could have been close to you who were constantly exposed to asbestos. When the cancer affects your abdomen, you will have weight loss, bowel obstruction, pain and so many others. Make sure you consider all the treatments available so that you can get better. However, when the symptoms start to show, there is little that can be done to completely eliminate the disease. Therefore, mesothelioma is a very serious and fatal disease. It is a form of cancer that affects the mesothelium which is the protective lining of body organs like the heart, lungs and abdomen. The disease has one known cause which is asbestos. It is a natural mineral that comes with very strong fibers that can be inhaled or ingested into the body. They are used to produce many products which include crutch and brake parts, floors, ceilings and the products are as many as 3,000. People who are at risk include those who work in industries that deal with asbestos.
There are many symptoms of mesothelioma depending on the part of body the disease affect. When the disease develops on the lungs, it is referred to as pleural mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the abdominal cavity. Some of the symptoms of mesothelioma of the lungs are shortness of breath, discomfort and pain, swelling in the neck, lack of appetite, nausea and the list goes on. When you experience these symptoms, have a doctor rule out other diseases. If you know you have been exposed to asbestos at a particular time in your life, you will have to give details to the doctor so that they can consider this as a cause of your illness. You might have a chance to be cured if your condition is not as severe. However, most cases are usually known very late and you can consider the treatment options.
Symptoms of mesothelioma may be controlled by the treatment available. Your doctor can recommend surgery after taking into consideration all the aspects of your case. The most common treatments option available are the use of drugs to kill the cancerous cells. Chemotherapy involves the use of a combination of drugs which can be used effectively to kill the cancer cells. This treatment is however known for its many side effects which include making the patient very weak. The drugs kill even healthy cells in the body an this is the cause of the weakness. The victim will also experience hair loss because the hair growth cells are also destroyed. The medication will seek to slow down the progression of the disease.
The symptoms of mesothelioma that affects the abdomen include the following. Fever, anemia, vomiting, loss of appetite, bowel obstruction, breathing difficulty, accumulation of fluid which will be known by the abdominal swelling, swelling of the legs and the symptoms are many. You are advised not to ignore the treatments available if you are confirmed to have the condition. This is because medication has been known to act differently in many people and it might work for a longer time on you. You can seek compensation legally so that all your troubles can be compensated in the best way possible. Make sure your hire a good mesothelioma lawyer who will guide you through the process.

New York Mesothelioma Treatment Centers

New York mesothelioma treatment centers provide the best treatment for mesothelioma they possibly can. Firstly, mesothelioma is a deadly cancer which is caused by asbestos. The mesothelioma affects the protective covering of the lungs, abdomen, and heart. This vital covering is referred to as the mesothelium. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the abdomen while pleural mesothelioma affects the lungs. The leading cancer in terms of fatalities is pleural mesothelioma. This is because the asbestos that cause the cancer are mostly airborne. Asbestos is a mineral that occurs naturally and it is mined to be used to produce many products. It has very special properties which make it very suitable for this. Apart from being resistant to heat, it is also fire proof.
New York mesothelioma treatment centers offer traditional ways of healing as well as non traditional methods. The most common traditional ways of treating mesothelioma used in New York are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Not all mesothelioma cases have surgery as an option for treatment. The doctor will have to consider a few things before they decide surgery is suitable. If the tumors are very extensive, surgery may not work and it might even do more harm than good. If you qualify for surgery, the doctor will explain to you the various kinds of surgeries depending on the location of the cancer. The treatment is usually undertaken together with chemotherapy and radiation. This is referred to as 'multimodal' treatment and it is used for very severe cases.
Chemotherapy is the use of combination drugs to get rid of the cancerous cells. It is considered a very weakening therapy because of the side effects. You are also bound to loose hair while undergoing this treatment. Many drugs continue to be experimented on and sometimes, they are considered for chemotherapy. The use of high energy x ray is referred to as radiation and, what it does is to shrink the tumors and the radiation has some side effects which go away in a short while. The non traditional methods include photodynamic therapy. This therapy uses light and it is still in the experimental stage where the cancer cells are specifically destroyed by means of a fiber optic cable. New York mesothelioma treatment centers have this treatment but, only those who wish to be part of the experiment can participate.
Another non traditional way of treating mesothelioma is gene therapy which is also under clinical tests. This involves altering the gene of the cancer cells by means of injecting a 'suicide gene'. The cancer cells are targeted on their own unlike in chemotherapy. The New York mesothelioma treatment centers will give you more information on this topic. The university of Pennsylvania is researching on gene therapy. Immunotherapy is another treatment of mesothelioma that is also in the pipeline it is said to be very promising and it works by enabling the immune system to fight the cancer cells. There is no doubt that the future looks bright and in the cure for mesothelioma might just be around the corner. Meanwhile you can get the treatment available to manage the disease.

Mesothelioma Law Firm

There are very many mesothelioma law firms around and the main reason why they specialize in these particular cases is the huge return the cases can fetch. Others might be genuinely out there for the compassion of mesothelioma victims but, they are limited. Firstly though, mesothelioma is a cancer that affects the protective lining of the heart, lungs and abdomen. The known cause of mesothelioma is asbestos exposure. This is a natural mineral that has very many industrial uses mainly because of its heat and fire resistant qualities. It is known to lodge in the system when inhaled where it can stay there for many years where finally it causes the emergence of a disease. It has no scent and its fibers in the air are microscopic. Therefore mesothelioma law firms are relevant in the following way.
Firstly, the companies that employ workers to work exposed to asbestos have a case to answer because they have a moral duty to inform workers. They are therefore directly responsible for the illness in their worker. When a mesothelioma victim decides to file a suit against the company, they need to have the representation of good lawyers who can be found in a good mesothelioma law firm. Some of the workers who might be at risk to asbestos exposure include miners, millers, shipyard workers, building construction workers and others. With the serious realization of the dangers posed by asbestos, strict legislations have been put in place to ban certain types of asbestos and also there are restrictions on the amount of asbestos exposed to workers.
Also, workers who are close to asbestos have protective cloths and equipment to protect then from the substance. When they leave work, most workers take a shower and change cloths to avoid contaminating their families. When you suspect that you might be suffering from mesothelioma, you need to visit a doctor for a diagnosis. If you have the disease, you need to take time and look for a reputable mesothelioma law firm which will have good lawyers. They should have some experience in this kinds of cases. They should not live very far from where you are located so that you can reach them with minimal cost. The mesothelioma law firm should be legal and licensed to practice law in your particular state or country. They should give you more information on the cases they have been able to resolve.
On the internet, you will find very many mesothelioma law firms advertising themselves and you should not just take them at face value. You need to contact them and visit their offices to get a first hand feel of what they are all about. Many firms will be literally fighting for your case and you do not have to hire the ones who are first make a perfect pitch. Firstly, you need to know that they can represent you and win the case. You should discuss on the attorney fee before you hire the lawyer from the law firms. Usually, the most common way of payment is through a contingency basis and this means that they will be paid when you win the case. There is no doubt that with the right lawyers on your side, you are certain to get your deserved justice will be served.

OSHA and Modern Asbestos Regulations

The use of asbestos for relatively modern industrial purposes dates back over a century, though partial knowledge of its dangers has existed for thousands of years. Despite concerns raised by medical doctors and scientists in the early 20th century, the asbestos industry avoided serious regulation for decades. Though laws like the Clean Air Act of 1970 did help reduce the use of asbestos , obstacles to stricter regulation were present as late as the 1990s, when an appeals court struck down an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulation known as the Asbestos Ban and Phase Out rule. As a result, asbestos-containing products are used and produced even today.
Today, asbestos use and exposure is regulated by several government agencies, including the EPA and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, otherwise known as OSHA.
Though virtually anyone can be exposed to asbestos, workers in industries such as construction, mining, and shipbuilding are particularly at risk. Furthermore, the families of these workers are also at risk from secondary exposure if precautionary measures are not taken.
According to OSHA, steps which can be taken to prevent excessive exposure to asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) include:
- Limiting the time that workers spend working with or around ACMs
- Separating asbestos-heavy areas from the majority of the workforce
- Installing effective ventilation systems in and around ACMs
- Providing workers with approved protective gear and clothing
- Providing workers with showers to remove asbestos after work
- Educating workers and administrators about the dangers of ACMs
Asbestos and Mesothelioma
Exposure to asbestos, even in small amounts and over a short period of time, can cause a deadly cancer known as mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a cancer which attacks the mesothelial lining of the lungs, heart, chest, and abdominal cavity, and it is almost always associated with ACMs. In some cases, mesothelioma can take years to show up after exposure to asbestos, but can often kill within 6-12 months of diagnosis.
Though OSHA has set a limit of 100,000 fibers per cubic meter of workplace air, some experts contend that there is no such thing as a "safe" threshold of exposure, and advocate that the United States follow the example of other countries that have banned the use of asbestos entirely.

Lung Cancer Prevention

Is there anybody alive in the United States today who does NOT know that smoking tobacco is the leading cause of lung cancer? Probably not. To avoid that knowledge, you'd have to live under a rock. There isn't any way to absolutely prevent lung cancer, but never smoking or quitting smoking is one way to significantly lower the risk.
There are, however, other risk factors associated with lung cancer that we have no control over at all. There are environmental causes, that we just can't do anything about. Such things as asbestos, radon, arsenic, chromium, nickel, tar, and soot that are commonly found in the workplace can cause lung cancer in people who have never smoked. The United States and other countries are working to control these substances in the workplace and some progress has been made - not enough, but some.
Just plain old air pollution is another cause of lung cancer. The incidence of lung cancer is higher in cities where air pollution is worse.
Studies have shown that a good diet that is high in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and low in saturated fat, red meat, and preservatives does lower the risk of contracting lung cancer.
Abstaining from alcohol consumption altogether is another way to lower your risk of contracting lung cancer.
Research shows that people who are physically active have at a lower risk for developing lung cancer than those who are sedentary - and this is true even after taking cigarette smoking into account.
Using drugs, vitamins, or other agents to try to reduce the risk of, or delay the development or recurrence of, cancer is called chemoprevention. This is an area that scientists are studying, and there are clinical trials in progress that are testing both natural as well as man-made drugs, but it has not become a standard treatment or therapy.

Causes and Treatment of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a form of lung cancer, predominantly caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. In fact, mesothelioma is a cancer of the mesothelium, the sheath that covers major organs such as the lungs (pleurum), the heart (pericardium) and the abdominal cavity (peritoneum). Pleural mesothelioma is by far the most common kind.
Mesothelioma and Asbestos
When asbestos fibers are inhaled, they become embedded in the lining of the lungs. Due to their small needle-like size, the normal defenses of the body are unable to detect them. Usually, any foreign bodies such as this would either be coughed up, or be removed through a build-up of mucus around them. But nor asbestos. They cause inflammation of the lungs and tissue damage, leading to scarring and coughing. These are the initial symptoms of asbestosis, though asbestosis is not mesothelioma.
No one knows for sure why cancers develop, but once cancerous cells are formed in the pleura, it gradually becomes thicker, and over time restricts breathing and causes shortness of breath and coughing. What is known as 'pleural effusion' occurs, as the fluid of the pleura, designed to lubricate the movement of the lungs against the other organs nearby, builds up and exerts pressure on the lungs. The thickening of the pleura continues as an increasing number of cells become cancerous, until death eventually occurs.
The Effect of Smoking
Although smoking is known to lead to a number of forms of cancer, it does not in itself promote mesothelioma. However, a patient that has been exposed to asbestos, and who also smokes, will be more liable to contract the disease than a non-smoker will. This is why smokers are generally awarded lower sums in compensation than non-smokers with the same condition. However, it would be wrong to state that smoking is a cause of mesothelioma.
It is, however, the cause of many more lung cancer cases than mesothelioma caused by asbestos, and smoking and asbestos together also increase the risk of the patient developing general lung cancer, just as prolonged exposure to asbestos causes more than just mesothelioma. Asbestos lung cancer and mesothelioma are not the same thing.
Symptoms
The major symptoms are shortness of breath, weight loss, nausea and pain. This is true of all forms of mesothelioma, not only pleural mesothelioma. In the case of peritoneal mesothelioma, the abdomen becomes very painful and distended, just as the pleural version causes tightening and swelling in the chest due to pleural effusion. The pressure created can also result in pain, apart from that of the cancer itself.
Diagnosis
If the disease is not diagnosed early, then survival is unlikely. Therefore, any person who has previously worked in the asbestos industry, or has used asbestos in their employment, should make their doctor aware of that fact. They can then be placed on a schedule of regular examinations designed to detect the first signs of the disease. If the condition is detected early enough, most treatments available can be used effectively, and surgery is much more likely to be effective if the area affected is able to be isolated.
If you have contracted the disease, stopping smoking is essential, and you must try to avoid all infections of the lungs and airways. It is possible to have the condition treated, but if diagnosed too late then treatment tends to be palliative, and designed to make the patient as comfortable as possible.
It is essential, therefore, that people that have a history of contact with asbestos inform their physician immediately to make sure that if the symptoms do occur, they are spotted before any lasting harm can be done. Only then will there be a hope of a cure and successful recovery from this insidious disease.

Early Symptoms of Lung Cancer

Knowing and understanding the early symptoms of lung cancer is one of the most important things that those who are at risk for the disease can do. Lung cancer is the most treatable when it is discovered early, and the only way to discover it early enough is to recognize and report the early symptoms of lung cancer. If you are noticing a combination of these lung cancer symptoms, be sure to talk to your doctor.
One of the early symptoms of lung cancer is a nagging cough that simply will not get better. Often the cough worsens with time and is accompanied by chronic chest pain. Coughing up blood is another of the many early symptoms of lung cancer. In fact, coughing up blood is one of the biggest symptoms that sends lung cancer patients to their doctors. Recurring bronchitis or pneumonia sometimes indicates that the disease is present. Fatigue and shortness of breath are more symptoms to watch out for if you suspect the disease. No matter what the symptoms are, if you have lung cancer, they will gradually progress in intensity as the disease progresses.
These lung cancer symptoms do not always indicate that the disease is present. There are other far less dangerous conditions that can cause these symptoms. However, ignoring the symptoms is dangerous, because if they are pointing to lung cancer, the disease will continue to progress. Early treatment is the best way to successfully fight lung cancer, so do not ignore these symptoms.

Lung Cancer Treatment -- Photodynamic Therapy Offers a Safe Alternative

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is one of the newer lung cancer treatment options available today. Lung cancers are sometimes inoperable, particularly when they are situated in the bronchi or trachea. Similarly, cancers that have spread from other parts of the body to the bronchi cannot be removed surgically. In such cases, photodynamic therapy offers a safe and effective treatment option.
In a best-case scenario, PDT is used as a curative therapy that can eliminate the cancer completely. In many patients, PDT is employed as a palliative lung cancer treatment meant to provide relief from symptoms even though it does not cure the cancer.
Photodynamic therapy can effectively relieve symptoms like breathing difficulties from obstructions in the bronchi or trachea. In some patients, tumors block the airways and can cause coughing, breathing difficulties, pneumonia and bleeding. PDT may be used in such cases depending on the location, size and stage of the tumor.
PDT destroys cancer cells using a laser. To ensure that only cancerous cells are destroyed, a special drug is used to make the cancer cells more sensitive to this treatment while leaving normal cells intact.
There are three steps involved in the process of lung cancer treatment using PDT. In stage one, a drug called photofrin is injected intravenously. This drug has the property of making body cells very sensitive to light. Normal, healthy cells eliminate photofrin, but cancerous cells are unable to do so and the drug is retained in such cells.
In the second stage of PDT, about forty to fifty hours after the injection is given, a flexible tube is inserted into the bronchia. This tube contains a red laser of low intensity. The cancer cells exposed to this laser are destroyed.
In the third and final stage, about two days after the laser light exposure, a bronchoscopy is done to get rid of the dead cancer cells and mucus from the bronchi or trachea.
A patient can benefit from photodynamic therapy only if his or her cancer is situated in a location that is accessible to a bronchoscope. Also, the tumor must be large enough so that the bronchoscope can easily detect it. This means that some cancers like those located outside the bronchial passages cannot be treated with PDT.
Lung cancer treatment with PDT offers almost no dangerous side effects, unlike other treatment methods. Photosensitivity is about the only side effect that lasts for a while. Since photofrin makes cells sensitive to light, the patient may experience heightened light sensitivity for a period of four to eight weeks after the treatment.
During this time, even normal exposure to sunlight can result in severe sunburn. For this reason, patients who have undergone PDT are advised not to venture out into the sun for about eight weeks after their lung cancer treatment. In contrast to photodynamic therapy, major surgery done to eliminate lung cancer usually poses much greater risks.
Many tumors that are inoperable because of their location are prime candidates for treatment with PDT. When used as a palliative, this type of lung cancer treatment offers almost immediate relief.
Given all these advantages, increasing numbers of patients have been using photodynamic therapy as a lung cancer treatment of choice.

Important Facts About Lung Cancer

According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is still one of the most prevalent forms of cancer today. Even after all of the thousands of antismoking campaigns and a huge decrease in the number of smokers, it is expected that there will be more than 215,000 new cases diagnosed this year, and there will be nearly 162,000 deaths.
In 1991 (the latest year that I could find statistics for), 27% of Americans were smokers. That compares to 29% in 1987 and 44% in 1964. The decrease is because of more people quitting the smoking habit, and NOT because of fewer people starting the smoking habit. It's obvious that all of the efforts to prevent people from becoming smokers have not been successful.
Cigarette smoking is considered the number one cause of the disease. There are substances in smoke that cause damage to lung cells. Because of this, smoking cigarettes, pipes, or cigars does cause lung cancer, and this is why it is also true that secondhand smoke can cause lung cancer in nonsmokers. The more often a person is exposed to tobacco smoke, the greater the risk of lung cancer.
However, cigarette smoking is not the only cause. Researchers have also determined that exposure to radon is a big risk factor for developing lung cancer. Radon is found in mines as well as in various parts of the country in the rock and soil. Radon is a radioactive gas that is colorless, odorless, and tasteless.
Exposure to asbestos is another cause of lung cancer. People who work at such jobs in the construction and chemical industries are most at risk for exposure to asbestos that can cause lung cancer.
A family history of lung cancer, even in people who have never smoked, also creates a higher risk for developing the disease.

What is Lung Cancer - Incidence, Signs, Symptoms, Causation, Prognosis and Treatment

INTRODUCTION
Lung cancer may also be the most tragic cancer because in most cases, it might have been prevented, 87% of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking. Lung cancer has long been the most common cause of cancer death in men and since 1987 it has also become the most common cause of cancer death in women. Lung cancer is the second most commonly occurring form of cancer in most western countries and although the lung cancer incidence is less common in developing countries, the rapid increase in the popularity of smoking will see the number of lung cancer sufferers in those countries quickly catch up with the western world.
Lung cancers can arise in any part of the lung, and 90%-95% of cancers of the lung are thought to arise from the epithelial, or lining cells of the larger and smaller airways (bronchi and bronchioles); for this reason, lung cancers are sometimes called bronchogenic carcinomas or bronchogenic cancers.
The most common type of lung cancers are epidermoid carcinoma, small cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma.
Most experts agree that lung cancer is attributable to inhalation of carcinogenic pollutants by a susceptible host. Who is most susceptible? Any smoker over the age of 40, especially if they began smoking before the age of 15, have smoked 20 or more for 20 years, or worked with or near asbestos. Two other factors also increase susceptibility: exposure to carcinogenic industrial and air pollutants (asbestos, uranium, arsenic, nickel, iron oxides, chromium, radio active dust, and coal dust.) and familial susceptibility.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
Because early lung cancer usually produces no symptoms, the disease is often in an advanced stage when first diagnosed. Late stage signs are: with epidermoid and small cell carcinoma; smokers cough, hoarseness, wheezing, dyspnea, hemoptysis and chest pain. With adenocarcinoma and large cell carcinoma; fever, weakness, weight loss, anorexia and shoulder pain. In addition, hormone production which regulates various body functions may also be affected.
DIAGNOSIS
Firm diagnosis requires chest x rays, sputum cytology, CT scanning, bronchoscopy the examination of pleural fluid and biopsies. Other tests to detect metastasis include bone scans, bone marrow biopsy and CT scans of the brain and abdomen.
METASTASES
Lung cancer most often spreads to the liver, the adrenal glands, the bones, and the brain. Lung cancer that has metastasized to the bone causes bone pain, usually in the backbone (vertebrae), the thighbones, and the ribs. Lung cancer that spreads to the brain can cause difficulties with vision and weakness on one side of the body.
Lung cancer may grow into certain nerves in the neck, causing a droopy eyelid, small pupil, sunken eye, and reduced perspiration on one side of the face; together these symptoms are called Horner's syndrome (see Autonomic Nervous System Disorders: Horner's Syndrome). Lung cancer may grow directly into the esophagus, or it may grow near it and put pressure on it, leading to difficulty in swallowing. Lung cancer may also spread through the bloodstream to the liver, brain, adrenal glands, spinal cord, and bone.
TREATMENT
Treatment for lung cancer depends on the cancer's specific cell type, how far it has spread, and the patient's performance status. If investigations confirm lung cancer, CT scan and often positron emission tomography (PET) are used to determine whether the disease is localised and amenable to surgery or whether it has spread to the point where it cannot be cured surgically. Treatment is usually a combination of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Surgery is usually the first option. Chemotherapy can be used as a first line treatment for lung cancer or as additional treatment after surgery. Radiation therapy can be directed at your lung cancer from outside your body (external beam radiation) or it can be put inside needles, seeds or catheters and placed inside your body near the cancer (brachytherapy). Radiation therapy can be used alone or along with other lung cancer treatments. Radiation therapy can also be used to lessen side effects of lung cancer.
Treatment may not be as effective for patients with bone or liver metastases from lung cancer, excessive weight loss, ongoing cigarette use, or pre-existing medical conditions such as heart disease or emphysema. At some point, if you and your oncologist or primary care physician agree that treatment no longer is advisable, hospice care can provide comfort.

Mesothelioma and Litigation - How to Get Cash For Asbestos Lung Cancer Palliative Care

Mesothelioma is a particularly nasty form of lung cancer, and mesothelioma litigation is increasingly being used as a means of getting cash for asbestos lung cancer palliative care. Without it, many families would not be able to afford professional care for their loved ones, and would have to tend for them themselves at the worst possible time for them and for the patient.
Incidences of mesothelioma asbestos lung cancer are steadily increasing, which indicates just how insidious this disease is. Caused by inhalation of asbestos fibers, the symptoms can take upwards of 40 years after exposure to appear, and may people who suffer do not even remember being exposed to the substance. It does not take much exposure, and many cannot understand the diagnosis when it is available because they cannot remember ever being exposed to asbestos.
There are no known 100% effective conventional medical treatments for mesothelioma, and the prognosis is generally bad. However, there are several things that can be done to alleviate pain and make the patient's life more comfortable. While drugs can help, hospice care is an option that takes pressure of the family and provides a comfortable environment for the patient. However, these alternatives can be expensive and if responsibility can be placed on an employer for the exposure that ultimately led to the disease, then compensation can pay for the palliative care.
This is not seeking charity, but rather making those responsible pay for the treatment. A high level of compensation will be needed to pay for the treatment and care needed, and in order to achieve this result you will require the services of a good mesothelioma attorney. Any lawyer will not do due to the specialized knowledge needed to persuade judges and juries that there very few causes of asbestos lung cancer other than exposure to the fibrous silicates that make up asbestos.
The compensation awarded can be very large, although smokers will receive less since their habit can be construed as contributing to the disease. Mesothelioma is not just another word for asbestos cancer, but is in fact a cancer of the mesothelium, a membrane that lines many body cavities, including the thoracic, or chest cavity. The lining of the lungs is called the pleura, so mesothelioma refers to any form of lung cancer involving that membrane. In fact 80% of mesothelioma cases are caused by smoking.
It is therefore very difficult for smokers to blame asbestos exposure for mesothelioma unless they have been working with asbestos. However, a good asbestos attorney should be able to secure a reasonable level of compensation, even for a smoker. It will be a fight though, since the asbestos companies and employers that required employees to work with the substance are aware of the high levels of compensation being awarded, and now actively fight such cases.
When you consult a law firm with a view to instructing them to fight your mesothelioma case, you should insist on talking with the attorney that will be handling your case. You can then discuss your strategy, and you can make sure that your attorney has had previous success with such cases. You don't want to retain a loser!
Ask questions, and determine the success rate of your prospective attorney in such cases. He or she must also appreciate your condition and understand how you feel, so that they can fight your case properly. Nothing can beat experience in a mesothelioma asbestos cancer lawsuit, so make sure that you get the best you can afford. Better still: tell them their fee depends upon them winning!

Next Door Mesothelioma

Peritoneal mesothelioma, the rarer of the two forms, can lead to swelling, abdominal pain due to fluid buildup in the abdomen cavity, weight. The other more common pleural mesothelioma symptoms include chest pain and difficulty breathing. Other symptoms often noted among patients include weight loss, fever, cough and night sweats. Also occasionally a patient may be diagnosed with pleural mesothelioma before any symptoms manifest.
A misdiagnosed disease is often an opportunity for the disease to grow in the body. The only way to diagnose mesothelioma is to take a series of tests to discover if the disease is present. A common minimum link to determine the disease is finding the patients proximity to asbestos related environment for 15 - 50 years. If so then image scans can help diagnose the disease. Commonly these include taking a chest x-ray which will show a picture of the lungs to determine if there are any abnormal changes.
A CT scan, computer tomography, is a type of x-ray that uses a computer rather than film to display its images. It can be used to show three-dimensional representations of the relevant parts of the body.
The final type of imaging that may be used is an MRI scan, or magnetic resonance imaging. In an MRI, magnetism is used in conjunction with the computer to create clear images of your body.
If your doctor finds an unusual mass during the imaging process, they are most likely going to take a tissue sample (biopsy), or draw fluid from it to determine what type of tissue it is. Typically a needle is used to draw a small amount of fluid from the tissue. If the results are not able to rule out the condition completely, the next step would normally be to insert a small tube which is attached to a camera and to take a small piece of the tissue remotely. In some cases a more extensive surgical procedure may be needed in order to get a good sample of the tissue. The extreme complicated nature of the disease and fatal nature of the disease often arouses fear in a patients mind.

Mesothelioma - A Blunder If Not Diagnosed

Mesothelioma is just one of the diseases that people can develop after prolonged asbestos exposure. It is a type of cancer that affects the mesothelial cells which cover the outer surface of most of the body's internal body organs. This is caused by the exposure to asbestos which was around quite a lot in certain areas before it was banned. It could have been contracted in a number of ways from simply breathing it in to picking it up second hand from other people's clothing, hair or skin.
Mesothelioma can take various different forms and can develop in the tissues covering the lungs or abdomen. The most common type diagnosed is pleural mesothelioma which affects the tissues lining the lungs, called the pleura. Fortunately, it is unusual for this disease to spread to other parts of the body. When it does, it doesn't usually cause any problematic symptoms.
Most people who develop mesothelioma will have worked in jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles. The most commonly affected trades were dockers, roofers, plumbers, electricians, shipyard workers and power station workers. However, it is possible for someone to contract the illness even if they have never had direct asbestos exposure. For example, family members may have breathed in the dust particles from the clothing of someone who worked with it.
There are various different symptoms that people can look out for if they know there is a chance they could have mesothelioma. Shortness of breath, a prolonged cough, chest pain, weight loss, abdominal swelling and fever are just some of the signs to look out for. These symptoms may not start showing until 20 to 50 years after asbestos exposure, however which is why many people don't realize what it is at the time.
Diagnosing mesothelioma can be very difficult because the symptoms are similar to many other conditions. For this reason it is extremely important that doctors are made aware of any history to asbestos exposure so they know what to look out for. In order to make a proper diagnosis, a physical examination, a chest x - ray and lung function tests will be performed in order to see if there is any pleural thickening, which is common among those who worked around asbestos. If anything suspicious is found a biopsy will be performed so that a diagnosis can be confirmed and treatment can begin.
Many people have enlisted the help of an asbestos lawyer in order to claim compensation against asbestos manufacturers. The first lawsuit was in 1929 and since then people have successfully won billions of dollars from these companies who neglected to implement safety measures to protect workers against exposure. Mesothelioma Attorneys often take some good percentage of the compensation so watch out before you go ahead and hire any one.

Mesothelioma - A Type of Cancer

Mesothelioma is considered to be the most deadly type of cancer that is caused by inhaling the asbestos particles that float in the air. Mostly people who are directly or sometimes indirectly exposed to asbestos contact this disease. It affects the mesothelium which is the protective lining of most the internal organs in the body. Malignant cells develop on the mesothelium of the heart, lungs or the stomach. The mesothelium of the chest cavity and the lungs is known as pleura, the stomach lining is called peritoneum and pericardium is the lining of the heart. There is provision in the law for the compensation of Mesothelioma patients and special lawyers called asbestos lawyers help the patients in their legal pursuit.
Symptoms of Mesothelioma
The symptoms of Mesothelioma occur at the last stage of the disease so curing it becomes very difficult. The symptoms can be seen after a long time of exposure to asbestos which may be a long gap of twenty to fifty years. The main symptoms are breathlessness due to accumulation of fluid in the chest, coughing, pain in the chest; blood may also appear with the cough or the spit. These symptoms can be seen if the pleura or the pericardium is affected. If the peritoneum is affected the patient will develop loss of appetite, pain in the stomach, loss of weight, problem in the bowel, anemia and fatigue. The patient may also suffer from frequent fever.
Treatment of Mesothelioma
An effective treatment of this disease depends on several factors like, in which stage the cancer has been detected, what is the age of the patient, how much the cancerous cells have circulated and the general health condition of the patient, that is whether he is suffering from some other disease or not. It has been observed that chemotherapy is the only treatment available for these patients. It uses medicines, chemicals or drugs in a systematic manner to eradicate the cancerous cells. The medicine is either injected directly in the body or administered in pill forms.
The other forms of treatment are immunotherapy, surgery and radiation by which the malignant cells are destroyed so that they do not spread to the other parts of the body. In severe cases many tumors may be detected on the affected area for this the doctors first remove the tumors by surgery and then the other forms of treatment follow. The patient has to decide whether he will undergo the painful treatment or survive for six to twelve months without treatment.

Mesothelioma Cancer Treatment

Cancer of the Mesothelium or Mesothelioma as it is popularly called, occurs when the cells of the Mesothelium begin to behave in an unusually manner and attack other tissues and organs that are close by. The cancer cells are likely to spread to other areas of the body. Research has found that a greater portion of Mesothelioma cases start emanate in the pleura.
Mesothelioma is said to be a rare with about two thousand cases reported annually in the U.S. there has however been a steady increase in it occurrence over the last twenty years. Research has also shown that the disease is more prevalent in men and the old the person the greater the risk. It is important to note that both men and women are at risk for this disease.
The major risk factor for this disease includes prolonged asbestos exposure. Asbestos is a mineral fiber used in the construction industry. Approximately seventy-five percent of all cases are attributed to asbestos exposure at work. The greater the exposure to asbestos and the longer the exposure the more likely the disease will develop. There are however persons who have had minimal exposure who have developed Mesothelioma. Also no everyone who has had prolonged exposure develops the disease.
Mesothelioma symptoms sometimes do not show themselves until up to fifty years after being exposed to asbestos. Symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pains, weight loss, abdominal pain, and fever. Once the cancer has moved beyond the Mesothelium patients are likely to experience severe pain, swelling of the face and/or neck, and trouble swallowing.
To diagnose Mesothelioma a biopsy is performed. Once this is done the doctor will perform more tests to determine the stage of the disease. Determining the stage of the disease will assist the doctor is developing a treatment plan.
Mesothelioma is usually treated by way of surgery. If the disease in the stomach or chest part of the chest or stomach lining is removed. A portion of the adjoining tissues is also removed. If the disease is found in the pleura then a lung may have to be removed. Another treatment is radiation therapy which is used to kill the cancer cells and to eradicate the tumor. Chemotherapy is also used. Clinical trials are currently on the way to find new treatments for this disease.

Mesothelioma - Your Questions Answered

Q. What is Mesothelioma?
A. Mesothelioma is a rare but potentially fatal cancer that affects a layer of the body called as mesothelium. Typically mesothelioma develops in the lining of the chest or abdominal cavity. There are three forms of mesothelioma:
1. Pleural mesothelioma. Mesothelioma that affects the coverings of the lungs. 2. Peritoneal mesothelioms. Mesothelioma that affects the covering of the abdominal organs. 3. Pericardial mesothelioma. Mesothelioma that affects the covering of the heart.
Pleural is the most common followed by peritoneal and lastly pericardial.
Q. What are the causes of mesothelioma?
A. Asbestos is the number one cause of mesothelioma. Asbestos is a fine fiber material that is resistant to heat. These fibers when inhaled get into the air passages and then reach the pleural cells. The asbestos injures the pleural cells and this injury leads to either benign or malignant transformation. Asbestos is found in many types of industrial supplies and equipments. Asbestos exposure does not lead to mesothelioma immediately. Often it takes decades before the person manifests the symptoms of the disease. Smoking does not lead to mesothelioma though the risk is more for a smoker exposed to asbestos.
Q. What are the symptoms of mesothelioma?
A. Often mistaken for pneumonia, mesothelioma is very difficult to diagnose based on symptoms alone. The most common symptoms include:
Persistent cough. Shortness of breath. Chest pains. Swelling up of face and neck. Coughing up blood. Nausea and vomiting. Weight loss. Loss of appetite.
Not everyone exposed to asbestos will develop mesothelioma. However keep in mind the risk of asbestos exposure and mesothelioma and speaking to a doctor will help in screening and early detection of the disease.
Q. What treatment options are available for mesothelioma?
A. Mesothelioma is often a very difficult disease to diagnose and treat. The various treatment options include:
Surgery in early stages to reduce tumor burden. Chemotherapy with agents like Cisplatin. Radiotherapy. Gene therapy. Immunotherapy. Photodynamic therapy.

Screening Tests For Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer that affects the pleural membranes (coverings of the lungs), the peritoneal membranes (coverings of the abdominal organs) or the pericardium (covering of the heart). Mesothelioma is generally seen in people exposed to asbestos. The tumor often takes years to develop and screening people exposed to asbestos remains the only option for early intervention against this disease. People who have held jobs in the construction, shipbuilding and manufacturing industry need to be screened routinely. The following screening tests can be useful to diagnose mesothelioma.
Imaging:
Imaging tests like a simple chest X-Ray, CT Scans, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) are often very useful and they may show thick, nodular masses on the pleural surface.
Needle Biopsies:
Under a local anaesthetic, the doctor will insert a large, hollow needle into the chest cavity. The needle is rotated and withdrawn to collect a sample of the tissue in the process. The sample is then examined in the laboratory for malignant cells. The needle biopsy is only about 40% accurate.
Open Biopsy:
This is one of the most accurate methods to diagnose mesothelioma. A larger tissue sample is often obtained with an open biopsy. However the procedure is performed under general anaesthetic.
Cytology:
Cytology of the pleural fluid has little value in diagnosing mesothelioma and is not routinely performed. Almost 85% of the times cytology is negative or inconclusive despite the presence of mesothelioma. Cytology can be performed in conjunction with a biopsy.
Even with the best screening techniques available today, mesothelioma escapes detection. Early screening and routine screening are crucial in people exposed to asbestos in order to prevent serious consequences.
